facts...this is around the time hov went back and remixed two songs that kiss was originally on ("best of me" & "fiesta")...somebody may look at you crazy today, but hov felt that pressure.

i'm sure he was relieved when he heard KTGG.

i mean, hov was nailing that whole "everything-to-everybody" model that most rappers in the early 00s aspired to. hov was killin rick rock beats.

It's not like Jay just hopped on those songs though. They sound completely different. It's not like a tacked on Jay Z verse on the same beats. The crazy part about both songs is that the remixes to both are more popular than the originals.

It's not that Jay just hopped on those songs, it's the fact that he sought those songs out after Kiss was on the original version of both songs. If you followed Hov career at all, you know he's rather subliminal.

You really think he sought out a Mya song to remix and a R. Kelly song to one up Kiss. Those are R&B songs and it's not like Jada was encroaching on Jay's territory with those songs. At the time, Jay only had a handful if those songs to his credit. That wasn't really Jay's lane at all. Sure he thre shots specifically on "Fiesta" remix, but the beef was full on when that dropped.

I was there bro...if you were following the situation closely, of course it meant something. I thought this was well documented lol.

Lox always had love for Roc, but by the time of 98/99, it started to become a real competition to see who held the crown. It's been talked about somewhere that SP whole "IDGAF who you are, so F who you are" verse on Reservoir Dogs was targeted at Hov. It wasn't personal, other than the battle for who runs the city. It got settled obviously, but for that moment in time (before Kiss dropped that clunker of an LP that we're in here talking about), Kiss was vying for the throne. Listen to "Blood Pressure" bro, it's a great time capsule (Kiss first bar and the "How you think your man hard when son on my dikk?/‘Cause I could get his ass bodied plus front him a brick" line was him talking to Hov...about Beans lol)

I followed it, but I never saw either of those songs as Jay subliminally getting at Kiss aside from the shots he threw.

I feel like this is one of those typical big budget late 90s/early 00s albums that is super bloated with some gems but lots of misses. You need hoes to buy your shyt but that doesn't mean "throw every ladies track you recorded on the album." The result is an uneven album with some super high highs (We Gonna Make It, None Of Yall Better, Show Discipline, etc) with some super lows. Feels like you got something for the streets, something for the ladies, shyt for the west coast. Ehh...

Completely agree. I have fairly fresh ears during this album over the years, and in real time it was underwhelming, and now it’s pretty much meh. I wouldn’t give this album past a 6.5/10, and it probably wasn’t much higher back then. Even looking at the track list right now with the credits, I’m getting disappointed all over again :pachaha:that’s why despite LOX absolutely crushing Dipset in that Verzuz, people shouldn’t be revising history like they have.

LOX still don’t have a group album that comes close to the first Diplomatic Immunity. Jada doesn’t have a solo better than Come Home With Me or Purple Haze, and possibly even From Me To U, though Kiss Of Death may come close, but even that’s a pretty bloated album. Styles has unbelievable consistency and I’d put Gangster and A Gentleman & Time Is Money as top tier LOX releases. Sheek undeservingly gets slander, but he has some cool under the radar albums himself, especially After Taxes. There probably needs to a deep dive into all these releases, cause I could go all day lol.

no styles dont and i love styles hes in my top 10
Interesting, is Jada in your top 5? Cause as a MC I’ll probably take Kiss even tho it could go either way like idc who someone would choose between them two but Styles projects be hitting to me although Jada got some classic records on his projects although they might not be as consistent

What producer should kiss work with for his next LP?

Any one of:

Hit-Boy
Various Griselda related producers
Harry Fraud
Justice League
Sledgren
Cardo
Black Medaphor
Bink!
Jake One

There would be no excuse to craft a unified yet standout sound for him with any one of them. He basically needs to sit in the studio and be advised by Rick Ross, Westside Gunn, and Berner. None of his homies to try to put on (like Lloyd Banks has continued to do).

That’s a great list of producers. I’ll take any of those. And why Berner? I’m assuming the fat weed dude from Taylor Gang? But Ross and west would be perfect. Oh when referring to banks you mean trying to put on new producers? If so yeah Jada should go big or go home. None of them emailed in random beats although they can be dope like I’m Banks’ case with his previous projects.

At this point, older rappers should just lock in with one producer like Kings Disease and 444 seeing that that formula works again nowadays. I don’t want Jada pandering at all to other sounds, stick to the real shyt that works for him

Yea that’s him. I don’t think he has a voice for rap, but his ear for beats is excellent.
