Janet Jackson’s 80s music is kinda underrated.

I like Thriller and Control on about the same level. And I’d rather listen to Rhythm Nation over Bad.

Janet in the 80’s was a bad mf. And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are both revolutionary.

But 80’s R&B is underrated in general :manny:

I'd say her 80s output is underrated compared to Madonna. I tried listening to Madonna's immaculate collection but found most of her material weak. Janet's music is just better all around, and she is a more compelling artist.
Nah both were dope. There wasn’t no big competition shyt like now, we were rocking out to everybody. I know it’s popular to hate Madonna now but she and Janet helped run the 80’s. Mike Jack was THE MAN, but a lot of artists had it back then too.

I feel it. I just don't get how Madonna sold more when Janet seemed like a crossover artist herself.

For the thread, this top shelf NJS to my ears:

It’s easy to shyt on Madonna now but she had a run when it came to the music, visuals, vibe and doubling down on the fukkery. You could tell she knew what she was doing but the music was always a priority.

And when Bedtime Stories rolled around you knew she wasn’t fukking around. She heard what Joi did on her first album and pivoted the same way MJ did after Bad. Bedtime Stories is literally her “Dangerous” and a great follow up to Erotica.

Dangerous and Bedtime Stories walked both artists into the 90s and they ran into the right producers at the right moments. But Madonna unquestionably had a stronger run in that decade and knew when to switch up the vibe for those album cycles
