My Mrs lived in Japan, half Japanese and speaks the language. But because of how the Japanese are she said she'll never be Japanese; always haifu.

Yep. I stopped at kanji as it’s just too much. The politeness tiers as you said, then regional dialect lol. I gave up after 10 weeks but occasionally read something short in hiragana for practise.
