Jay Z and Tidal Are Facing a Lawsuit Over Not Paying Out Royalties to Artists

The lawsuit, which you can read over for yourself here via the Jasmine Brand, claims that Tidal streamed 116 of the band's copyrighted songs without paying back any royalty payments in the process. Not only that, but the suit claims Tidal used faulty numbers to make payments to artists and may have undercut the money they owed to artists by as much as 35 percent. At this moment, the American Dollar's music is still available on Tidal to stream.

Tidal doesn't give out streaming stats to the public or even artists, according to the lawsuit. The band claims that they were owed monthly reports on royalty payments and usage of every song, but nothing was ever sent and now they're suing for copyright infringement. The news of this lawsuit comes just days after a report surfaced that Samsung is in talks to buy Tidal from Hov, though nothing has been confirmed as of now. Tidal's success has been a true rollercoaster for the past year, but recently saw a bump in subscribers whenKanye West exclusively released The Life of Pablo on the service. We've reached out to Tidal on the lawsuit and will continue to update when more details come out.

Well, if Spotify is getting sued, everybody is getting sued :manny:

Tidal started out with the bullshyt reasoning that they were gonna compensate artists, but now they're being sued for not doing exactly that. On top of that, the artists that started up Tidal (after Jay-Z bought it) are mainstream artists who are worth millions. Its the smaller artists that live of every penny and dollar.

That's why I never took Tidal seriously to begin with.

lol I don't hate Hov. Do I know you from another username? I don't have an opinion on this lawsuit but it's a funny story because of the contrast behind the marketing and the reality of the music business.

To be fair, this sort of problem isn't exclusive to Tidal. Spotify has had two +$100 million lawsuits filed against them recently. Pandora just settled a similar lawsuit against them last fall for $90 million. As music streaming becomes more popular and lucrative, you're gonna see the streaming companies get sued. To me, this lawsuit doesn't mean Tidal fukked up, it's happening to everybody. These companies gotta manage the allocation of royalties for libraries of 65 million songs. Shyts gonna fall thru the cracks somewhere.

Problem is, if one of the pillars that you founded your company on is being more fair to artists, this is horrible from a PR standpoint, especially when you're trying to sell the company.

Tidal withholding accounting streaming information is straight wrong.

this isn't the first time this band has sued. per wiki:

In August of 2011 the band brought a copyright infringement lawsuit against Joel and Victoria Osteen and the Lakewood Church for using their music on DVD’s and television broadcasts without permission. U.S. Federal District Judge Keith Ellison concluded the Plaintiffs properly stated claims for infringement but dismissed the claims against the Osteens themselves with leave to amend certain pleading technicalities. After several failed appeal attempts by the Osteens and Lakewood Church to the 5th Circuit courts, the case was later settled on undisclosed terms
