Remember when Tidal was a flop?

Remember how that was being pushed on the internet and all these message boards.

Funny how a year later Jay Z is saying they have 3 million subscribers and 1.35 paying premium.

I thought it was a flop?

I think Tidal is suing to be able to say they grew the company from nothing, meaning there were no subscribers and Tidal grew the current base organically.

It's a business move of some sorts that I don't fully know because I haven't read legal docs but sounds like some sort of strategy to me.

People were saying tidal was a flop before it was even officially launched.

Instead of building an empire with Dame, he flees to Europe and got finessed by them nordic cacs for a bootleg music streaming service. Sad day. Should have used the 57mil and created a music and movie publishing and production company for new artists.

Moron is just hustling backwards.

Far from hustling backwards. Streaming music is obviously the future while record sales continue to suffer.

He's actually had the odds against him and ppl have been trying to come after him bc of his move.

Him and diddy should pair up revolt x tiday

Dame was never anybody who could do anything worthwhile that Jay couldnt have done with someone else.. All Dames accomplishments are attributed to Jay being hot. Nothing more

Fails:
BlockSavvy
Pro Keds
Armandale
Vamp with Jim
Dash Motors
Dash Pictures
Magnet Radio

Getting Finessed out ROC

And yeah, Im not celebrating his misfortunes. We need more blacks in power... But this guy bragged about not wearing the same socks twice. Arrogant ass dude in his day...
so whatever...
Being a business man in rap is different. Dame lost his platform he was done after that

Might be nice like a one stop shop. Idk tho I dno the numbers but where does he say "I've invested too much" if this doesn't work?

I'm interested in his profit

He doesn't have a choice.

The entire music industry is transforming. Many losing money because of illegal downloads. Freemium business models like Spotify making profit off of content by giving it away for free for ad dollars.

The music industry is desperate for a solution that will turn a profit. They have put pressure on all these entities to change their business models so there's a lot of new investment in creating something new.

Jay Z got money from Live Nation to seed what he's doing. I believe he'll see it through, not just because he wants to but because he, like everyone else in the industry has to.

It's more personal for him in a way because he's a musician, a content creator. He knows how if say Spotify wins out that means artist will be making peanuts in the future.

I believe his business model is trying to retain a level of creative control and monetary success for the content creator as oppose to the platform (spotify) or the device (apple).

Time will tell though.

I see, so this is a transition dark ages period that we're going through right now, and the roles will be set extremely when someone has struck gold.

That's cool that he's doing that, it brings morality back into the game just a bit.

I wonder...

Maybe he'll use tidal as a platform for a label in the sense of it coating artists no money to release their work on a major circuit all he does is take a percentage. Isn't that kind of what he's done with Kanyes album and its exclusivity? I feel like he can only do that so much tho.

I think this is exactly what he's doing and I also think it's the future.

Why do you feel he can only do this so much? What makes you think there should be a limit to exclusivity?

I don't think so. Tons of content is exclussively owned by one entity. Look at all the content created by Netflix for example. It's not like you can watch content produced on Netflix on like HBO or anything. You have to buy Netflix in order to watch it. Same goes with shows on HBO.

Also movies. You can't see new releases on TV or via cable until a certain point in time when the content is released for certain other platforms.

The concept of exclusive content when it comes to music is a new thing but not something that people won't and can't get used to.

It is the dark ages in media in general right now. Lots of changes. Interesting to watch it all unfold.

I think because there's still this vacuum for music where if you don't have the album or song then you can go on YouTube and so once he really starts to do that then I'd imagine people saying that it's not worth it.

However that kinda work builds you a really solid ground where you can manifest your market. He should work towards creating more exclusives for paying members while providing free streaming minus the exclusives for other people. Then soon enough he could start selling the exclusive albums individually. Using tidal as a site to purchase music as well.

That's the thing though tv and movies are of high importance I feel. Most of the world doesn't know how to dl a movie online so nf is beautiful, but for music ppl can just get on yt.

What's the reaction of charging for music accessibility? Do more artists release more music or does quality arise since they're able to see a bigger piece of the pie

I can tell you that the age of free music is over.

I also don't think anyone really wants to purchase music in the same way anymore. I can say at least I don't.

I own a ton of music in the form of CDs, iTunes, etc. I loved owning at the time, but honestly, do you know how many CDs I've lost, ruined or broken?

Also iTunes, it's great is cool but I like it so much better to just have access to an entire album without being scared to buy the whole thing because I had no way of knowing if I actually liked the whole song.

And, quiet as it's kept, you never really own an Mp3. Those iTunes you purchased, you don't really own them, you're just renting them.

Who owns your digital downloads? (Hint: it's not you) | ZDNet

For this reason streaming to me is just better. There's also no getting around it anymore so paying for accessibility seems like how it's going to have to go.

at a certain point someone needs to command a price. not owning content that I can resell bother me! I always resell my video games & consoles when I had enough.

I'm not going to pay for streaming music cause it's just radio that I can't own. I make the exception for netflix cause no one has a free model that is legit/quality. crackle is okay....but lacks a lot of content. plus, streaming movie/tv platforms remove content and you can't watch it again.

I'm always going to be able to get ahold of a blu-ray player just like I can get ahold of a vcr to watch content. I always felt netflix was a better alternative to blockbusters....but I would still want to purchase the physical content. However, people don't mind being at the whim of netflix when they remove content....people are somehow cool with a disposable medium.
