that song was what introduced me to him to. but I was 7/8 when that dropped

i use to think they were saying "money in the pan" :snoop:

I remember realizing Jay was a big deal when Hard Knock Life dropped. You couldn't go more than 1 hour without hearing that song on the radio or on TV.

But I do recall hearing Aint No Nikka. I just didn't know who the song was by. I was 7/8 when it came out but, I remember hearing that cloudy drum beat all the time during summer camp.

I prefer Hov when he's in his bragadocious bag over great production, somewhere in between super lyrical and commercial. I think those 2 albums are the best example of that Hov for most of each album :manny:
i was listening to Encore and What More Can I Say the other day. might be  at his best

Thing is, lets say Jay really was nobody in 96...

How is that a blemish on his career? Sounds to me like his story is inspirational. To go from a nikka that nobody gave a chance...to what he became.

That shows tenacity and self belief. That nikka story is fukking incredible.

I ain't even a jay Z fan like that but...

It really isn't a blemish bc it's pretty irrelevant.

It's used to push the narrative of when hip hop had reached its apex sonically in 1996, Jay was an afterthought...he only got popular once the competition thinned out, and hip hop lost its edge

Reasonable is a classic album but no one cared about that shyt in 96. Tupac biggie and others were running the East. And Even Mase had next up After biggie died.

No matter what people say, it woulda been very difficult for Jay-z to blow up if it wasnt for biggie and pac's death. At his very best, the fans just didn't love him like that. He outlasted his peers by being smart with who he aligned himself with and by not taking any breaks.

This right here. Jay was smart and strategic with his marketing, promotion, and taking advantage of opportunities. I remember for the 10yr anniversary for reasonable doubt in 2006 they had hot97 promoting his show for the album on some “this was so ahead of its time that all yall were slow and didnt appreciate it” tip and that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Jay not getting that 1st album critical acclaim like Nas Big snoop or anybody with that classic out the gate really hurt his ego.

I liked the album but there was a lot of heat dropping that year and that album was a pallete cleanser.

Reasonable Doubt was critically acclaimed though.
