X had show dough, little to no dough...sell a bunch of a records and he still owed dough![]()
Yeap, I remember watching a show years ago. Swizz was waiting for DMX to show up in the studio and he never came. Swizz said it has happened multiple times before.Only think I can think of is that DMX was notorouous for wasting studio time and award show performances. That and his legal fees.
It's still amazing that even after all he grossed, he still owed after 5 albums.
prob because jayz knows how the ruff ryders really get down and didn't want those problems lol. Jayz does a lot for people today but it seems like when he was a rapper and ceo at Def Jam he didn't do as much for people. Except for those in his inner circle. Young guns were grammy-nominated and Jayz made them turn down a tour to do the roc the mic tour and give them like 600 a piece each a show. They could of made triple that on their own tour. Plus all the shyt he stole from state property in general including Chris's flow.
the whisper flow, the blueprint 2 era. Chris dropped some subliminals on young gunz albums too. Plus this quote from Chris:I’m ignorant on the matter, what’s an example of Jay taking Chris’s flow
“It’s a blessing being mentioned in the same breath as Jay. Let’s start there. I ain’t going to take none of this for granted or be big-headed. Steel sharpens steel. We all in the studio, things rub off on each other, that’s just how it happened. I might have learned things from him, he might have learned things from me. You’re never too young. I got younger guys that I still learn from til this day, you know?”
“I want to clarify that [Jay] doesn’t steal anyone’s songs,” he said, “He steals swag, ideas, concepts–whatever you want to call it…Jay doesn’t just straight-up jack you for a song. He’s just smooth with it. You ever listen to Young Chris rap and then go back and listen to Jay? You almost start to scratch your head. The old Jay-Z never rapped like that. That’s Young Gunners flow to the tee. There are actually people that don’t know that that [the whisper rap] was [Chris’] flow. I don’t understand why Jay don’t just say that he got the swag from the young bull…Jay has no swag of his own. He has no natural cool n*gga style. But at the end of the day he has his own path to craft just like we all do and I’m all about making sure my path is full of positivity and creativity.” (XXL Mag)
However, Young Chris explained that people’s feeling about this controversy are arbitrary and shift back and forth.
“I don’t really get into that. [Jay’s] my man. People say I took his shyt. A few weeks back they was saying I sound like Jay-Z, but years down the line they’re like, ‘Oh hold on, maybe [Jay-Z] took his shyt!'”
Guess those Drag On and Parle albums weren’t flying off the shelves
But it’s not like all X’s later shyt was selling like crazy, the Lox weren’t some big sellers and you could only imagine how much they were racking up with video budgets, studio time, blowing cash on bullshyt, recouping and whoever else they signed just not working out. RR wasn’t a powerhouse outside of X and Eve’s early projects (and the first 2 complications)
Most of that was through Interscope tho, DMX was the only RR artist on Def Jam
Still, to sell 20+ million albums and still owe the label 12 mill is crazy
I doubt that Jay could've made those 12 million disappear just like that, if it was really money the label fronted him for legal fees or something like that. He just decided not to keep him hostage on Def Jam, since he was past his prime anyways and the label had no use for him anymore.all true and still the last part like you has me
there is may be more to it behind the scenes that we dont know about. this doesnt seem feasible, but on the other hand you are correct....they charge you for everything even shyt you dont truly owe. the $12 million wasnt a liquid debt. just everything a label is going to hit you with as you said....some of which we know is unethical but not illegal.
this too. although they couldve put X on ice and he couldnt do shyt about it or ask for an override or buyout from next label. I am just of the stance that if Jay did this Def Jam signed off on it because the $12 mil was a write-off compared to the many millions they profited. and wtf was Ruff Ryders role in all of this in between label business? (cant wait to see the doc)
sn: from all the stuff I have ever heard, X is one of the most arrogant artists I have ever heard spoken about. he has always had this competition with Jay, even recently when he wanted to do Versuz against him. but Irv always talks about their rivalry. Jay was jealous of X too. looks like with this info, Jay comes out looking like the bigger man.
