Great post.I think JT's biggest issue beyond his shot selection and average athleticism is his obvious lack of resolve and mental fortitude. His faith in himself is lacking and as the missed shots & turnovers begin to pile up, he struggles more and more to move beyond the last play. Kobe is clearly a huge part of him as a player which is why it's unfortunate he seems to have missed what made him so special.
He was able to compartmentalize better than any athlete past or present. He had the uncanny ability to tune out the outside noise and focus on the task at hand. Colorado. Shaq. Media. Even his own legendary coach. That directly played into his unwavering faith in his ability and psychopathic level of confidence. Missed shot? It has nothing to do with the next possession. Turnover? Yeah, I did it -- get the fukk over it. Missed bunny at the rim? I don't even remember that but I am driving to the rim on the next play. Hell, made shot? Great, but what about our next possession? Tatum on the other hand not only passively showed cracks when he rebuffed the discussion concerning him being a budding superstar on the basis that he wasn't the one who started it, but he also actively showed them on the court this series with his body language.
The drooping head and shoulders. No longer even looking for the ball at certain points. Contrast that to how he played against Giannis & Durant and how confident he was vs how meek and uncertain he looked in the Finals. If you're a Kobe fan, you have to understand you need to have a really, really short memory. The 20 foot fadeaways & difficult buckets were nice, but Kobe's greatest gift was between his ears.
His playmaking wasn't an issue this series. He needs to work on his handle, jumper, ambidexterity, and strength.Tatum gotta get in the lab and improve his handle and playmaking… He got time I won’t fault him…
The gap between Tatum and Brown isn't that wide and it never has been.
Media loves Tatum and wanted to crown him so bad for a long time. Dude isn't that nice. Not a tier 1 superstar.
