Today, Republican presidential candidateJeb Bush, who as of-late has gone relatively gaffe-free, uttered a phrase that may not go over too well with the constituency he seeks to reach. During an interview that was live-streamed on the app Periscope, Bush told New Hampshire’s The Union Leader that to grow the economy, “people should work longer hours.”

He was answering a question about his plans for tax reform and responded:

“My aspiration for the country and I believe we can achieve it, is 4 percent growth as far as the eye can see. Which means we have to be a lot more productive, workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows. It means that people need to work longer hours” and, through their productivity, gain more income for their families. That's the only way we're going to get out of this rut that we're in.”

I really hope the public is not stupid enough to vote for this guy...after all the progress we've made with Obama in office we truly need another 4 years of a left/center president to bring the middle class back..a lot of republicans are too far out of touch

American Average Work Hours:
  • At least 134 countries have laws setting the maximum length of the work week; the U.S. does not.
  • In the U.S., 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females work more than 40 hours per week.
  • According to the ILO, “Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers.”
  • Using data by the U.S. BLS, the average productivity per American worker has increased 400% since 1950. One way to look at that is that it should only take one-quarter the work hours, or 11 hours per week, to afford the same standard of living as a worker in 1950 (or our standard of living should be 4 times higher). Is that the case? Obviously not. Someone is profiting, it’s just not the average American worker.

Apparently that's still not enough for Jeb Bush. Unfortunately, this probably won't hurt him too much because Democrats will be too scared/inept to call him out on it.

Not even that every time there is a republican war occurs because that's how their cronies make bread

I agree with what he said, but not what he meant.

We need more people with full time jobs that have real benefits and less of this service crap.

We need to "squeeze" working hours. People who are working 60 should be pushed towards 45-50. People working 20 should be pushed towards 30-35.

With commuting, I leave my house at 730 and get back at 930 every day. That's no fun.
