Prime DR had the biggest rappers earth. Prime Roc did not.
Not at the same time

It was only a few months run breh

Suge visited Pac in prison Oct 95, he was dead Sep 96

Snoop was already a shell of himself, the Dogg Pound never lived up to their potential, and Dre was already gone

Sign majority Philly rappers but says it affected New York brehs...

If anything, Philly put the Roc on its back from Jay dikkriding Young Chris flow, switch up the bling look for a more gully grimey look (fatigues, timbs, throwbacks, etc), and State Property>>>>Dipset movement.

Jay and em owes Philly their flowers because dude would have been rocking those bland Guru digital thug bars in the 2000s.

Is it me but its aways crazy to see rockafella to be this def jam/seath row type record label?
The culture impact probably was bigger then commercial sales

Like state property is a cult classic, people forget the hold jay himself had on the culture.

shyt jay was the first rapper with a shoe, and it was selling out at the time.

Dips was a extension
State pro
Beefs

Not to mention jay was the top 3 rapper from 98 to 04.

Streets is watching, backstage, fade to black docs

Fam, you're grasping at straws.

96 Pac, from january to his death in sept was reppin' DR with his biggest album out on DR. Pac was the biggest face of Hip-Hop. 2 years after Snoop being the same on the same label.

The Roc NEVER had that type of pull. Never. The only thing that came close for it is 98 Roc.

I mean they were street dudes :mjlol:(especially Beans dumb ass), but the reality is that if it wasn't for a Philly Cheesesteak and a loosie, Jay and em would be still on that stuttering digital thug flow.

This 2000 takeover switch so much shyt up its not even funny:

Magically Jay and Memph switched up the flow:

Before 2000:

Jay said himself that he told Beanie, Freeway, Young Gunz, etc to FLOOD the streets with music a year beforehand because he knew 50 was coming and shyt was about to change but they didn’t listen to him.

I think its soft key forgotten how much of a super nova 50 was at the time. I was never a fan personally but it legit felt like 50 just completely took over Hip Hop OVERNIGHT. In The Club and 21 Questions were EVERY fukkING WHERE! You could NOT escape those two songs. Get Rich was hot as fish grease. Then the G-Unit take over, then The Game. 50 had a good 5 year stranglehold on mainstream rap the likes I wonder if we’ll ever see again.

Its a wonder that somebody like Kanye was able to break through as the “breath of fresh air” the way he did.
That's because Kanye was considered a backpack and conscious rapper, something that we haven't and never seen. After Kanye look how many backpack rappers we've had.

This. To be specific. After Kanye look how many backpack rappers were becoming mainstream.

The general public and fans were tired of the generic gangsta image and tough guy persona. shyt totally changed. You either was super pop, gangsta rockstars lol, Wayne was headed to his alien phase, and more backpack conscious rappers started to bubble heavy underground then pop after Kanye then Lu hit.

We really need a doc on it lol

Same can be said for Roc though :yeshrug:

Kanye debut dropped in 2004, by then Bleek and State Property was close to finished, Purple Haze was the last Dip Set album on the label, Jay was "retired" but dropping them collab duds with R. Kelly and Linkin Park

Murder Inc....

You gotta explain this one my boy
RIGHT! If ANY label mentioned in this thread has been overexaggerated, it's Murder Inc. run... that shyt was a two-act show. Tah, Black Child, Vita, all them other miscellaneous nikkas had close to nothing to do with Murder's success. It's Ja and Ashanti for about three years give or take. Murder even being associated in a convo about Roc, Bad Boy, or Death Row is NUTS :pachaha:

Far as Death Row, the only thing I will say is that as great a run as it was, I can't help but think about how much bigger it could have been if they were about a steady flow of product. It would be damn near non-negotiable if they had really committed to getting them gotdamn projects out. Especially after 'Doggystyle' and 'Above the Rim' dropped so close together and spun off so many hits- I feel like the movement shoulda been on for a Rage album, a DPG album, and a Nate album ASAP. As weird as it is, it seems like the addition of Pac was a great triumph and the beginning of the end at the same time. His death, Dre leaving, and Suge going to jail are all connected in a sense.

This.

I was out in the suburbs at the time and "Wanksta" was getting played everywhere.

After that I knew it was a wrap. Had people that never heard "How To Rob" coming up to me like :krs: "you heard of this new rapper 50 Cent?!"

As far as the thread, Jim Jones saying this is comedy because Dips were internally beefing with Jay at the time.

Not saying the label would've survived with or without that but they were never team players on the label.

Fred.
