I like Keyshia Cole but :yeshrug:

That run H.E.R. had was amazing :wow:

Lol I fux with both but objectively, what run did HER go on that Keyshia hasn't done & then some on her run?

Or maybe I just need to understand if you mean critical acclaim, talent (playing instruments), etc. Because as far as charting, songs that have bigger cultural impact, and how long they were at their peak, I'm not sure it's even close.

HER had a nice lil 2-3 year run and has been tryna find her way byke sense. Keyshia's peak had to have lasted 4-5 years IIRC.

Yall gassing Aaliyah heavy .She doesn’t have a great album (One in a million is a personal one ) and wasn’t the best singer in the world .

She was influential but that can’t carry you when we talking about all time greats

Brandy was much more adventerous musically which has its draw backs. Vocally Brandys influence among her peers cant be denied. And do we really need to have a debate about Brandy vs Mary and Aaliyah vocally lol? For Mariah,Whitney and Aretha to be that high on a rnb list, vocals must count for alot. And damn if they was flops but Full Moon and Afrodesiac are two of the greatest female rnb albums ever. I really liked her latest album as well. Two different classes of artist imo.

Mary and Beyonce are paint by numbers, not that theres anything wrong with that. Same reason alicia keyes should be higher. Stevie at one,but the woman projected to be the next Stevie at 33 smh. Peaks matter too

Full Moon and Afrodisiac are not better albums than My Life and What's The 411?. At all. Them two Mary albums were critical. So was One In A Million.

This shyt is wild because I never thought I'd really have to be arguing with a cat about Mary's impact on r&b music. Like really? This what we doing? Lol.

Vocally, Brandy is dope and she's an icon. But Mary's music shifted the genre. Anything Brandy was doing musically was a direct byproduct of what Mary had established in 1992. Mary was literally the foundation of the 90s. She started it all.

The genre took a further shift when One In A Million was released and Aaliyah was working with Timbaland and Missy. Thats when shyt got real. Rodney Jerkins already admitted that a lot of his work with Brandy was basically him trying to imitate what Timbaland was doing with Aaliyah. They were trying to recreate that sound. And it's funny you mentioned Afrodisiac...the album that sounded like nothing but Aaliyah leftovers. Lol.

Sorry but..Brandy is cool but she is not Aaliyah and she damn sure isn't Mary.

The list is based off vocals, billboard stats, critical acclaim, longevity, impact/influence

Brandy was def influential but when you compare her to the likes of Aretha (who has 10+ Grammys, 70+ million records sold )or Whitney (Grammy AOTY winner, 100+ million records sold) their placement makes sense

Mary paint by the numbers ? She helped to usher in a new genre...hip-hop soul

Beyonce is one the most versitle and experimental artist in the top 10, in addition to being a great vocalist

That said not a big fan of the placements either

BeyoncĂ© shouldn’t be top 10

I wish they would stop kissing ass

Replace Beyoncé with Luther

James Brown is funk and soul not R&B

Replace him with Earth, Wind and Fire

MJ is barely R&B

Put him at 10 or 9

Stevie and Aretha are soul - respect to the legends

Replace them too

But most people don’t listen to enough music to tell the difference between the genres either that or they’re too busy kissing ass

You're basing this on it being a Billboard magazine list. More than likely, everyone who participated was Black.

Your first problem is assuming blackness.
You're basing this on it being a Billboard magazine list.
My answer was based on research about the people whom wrote the article and Billboard staff.
More than likely, everyone who participated was Black.
It is true that everyone who participated in compiling this list was not black.

Was it really a different genre? Or was it just a woman doing what men had already been doing:comeon:. Its like saying Aaliyah created a new genre when she basically took what R Kelly was doing and did it as a teenage girl. Im giving Aaliyah influence based on her vocals. So many females try to copy that simple, laid back airy style she did in modern day. Im giving Brandy credit vocally because shes highly regarded by her peers as a "vocal bible":wow:. Brandy has sold 40 million albums worldwide. So shes not exactly a bum on that front. Although Mary has sold alot more.

I could feel that if Alicia Keys wasnt sitting at 33. Alicia has sold 70 million albums and has WON 17 grammys:comeon:

Which leads me to believe vocals must have some major sway in this list if you check other boxes. Brandy has 40 plus million sold worldwide. 1 grammy with 13 nominations. Had a t.v show called Moesha that was impactful. And did a musical with Whitney Houston on prime time t.v. Im just saying i think that gives her enough cache to be in the convo. Then vocally Mary and Beyonce getting packed up easily. But maybe im ovwrhyping the impact of vocals because Whitney,Aretha and Mariah are so high. Widely considered goat female vocalist of their eras. I get Beyonces high too,but shes Beyonce.

H.E.R ahead of Keyshia Cole:comeon:

Top ten

10.) Marvin Gaye
9.) R Kelly
8.) Mariah Carey
7.) Prince
6.) James Brown
5.) Whitney Houston
4.) Beyoncé
3.) Michael Jackson
2.) Aretha Franklin
1.) Stevie Wonder

Top 10 damn near looks backwards for me. Donnnie Hathaway and Smokey was somewhere in the teens irrc smh. Not sure how the hell Whitney is so high. And Beyonce is damn near blashemous over half this list. How is there 40 spots between her and Aaliyah:gucci:?

Beyonce had a longer career the aaliyah

Jay and Nas had longer careers than Pac and Biggie. Should there be 40 spaces in between them? Does Beyonce have a One In a Miilion yet? I still see alot of fans from that era arguing Aaliyahs case. That should count for somwthing

R & b is different from rap. Unless Aaliyah was a song writer you can't compare
