John made the face turn work in real time due to his charisma and promo ability. He's objectively all time in that regard. Having said that, this will absolutely be looked back on as one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- squandered heel turns in history. No doubt Cena wanted to pull the plug and put Cody over for good here. His quip at The Rock in that promo was genuine. It looks crazy now but I can't imagine how hilarious and bizarre it's going to look to fans 10+ years from now.

The biggest heel turn in 20 years went down with Travis Scott and The Rock in a wrestling ring collecting souls, but neither man were ever seen again for the duration of the reign. One of the most bizarre things with zero payoff that I've ever witnessed, and I was watching WCW in 2000. They're going to edit that moment to hell and back.
