Every compromise in the Civil War was always contingent on the destiny of enslaved black people.

White people can discuss the era and the history with a sort of elevated abstraction and from an academic point of view no matter where they fall on the matter.

Yet, as a black man, I can only view it as an existential crisis and find the above kind of disgusting because it all boils down to a debate about black people's humanity.

fukk this cac.

This dynamic was highlight in a more articulate way after listening to the Washington Post podcast Presidential, about US presidents. They had this black woman who was an American Historian who said that despite her love for history she felt the same contradiction reading the debates and arguments of the founding fathers and yet none of these debates and arguments ever included black people themselves. Its disgusting in a paternalistic type of way.

Robert E. Lee was so honorable that he forced every black person in confederate conquered territory to be sent back south to be re-enslaved. This include freedmen and not just escaped slaves.

The whole dynamic just pisses me off to be honest.
