Long story short, I just graduated high school this past year, I had a division two basketball scholarship, but i felt it wasn't worth playing nor doing.

I had good grades all through high school, but its August and the college I am interested in going to is way too expensive for my taste.

Everyone in my family is against it, but I feel it would be my best option. They are telling me "everyone else is taking out student loans, its not the worst thing in the world!" but I am strongly against student loans, and I feel there are a million ways to become successful in life, and taking out 40 thousand dollars in loans isn't one of them.:yeshrug:

How do coli brehs feel about joining the military fresh out of high school? Do you think it would be a dumb idea?

Thanks for the thoughts in advance,

When I told my family/friends I was going to join the military they thought I was crazy. Most people are against it because they don't know everything the military offers. You just have to get everything you can out of it. Pick a job that translates to the civilian world, use your VA loan, go to college free and then make sure you document all your injuries so you can get disability. Joining the military is easily one of the best moves I've made. Good luck breh.

Wait hold on...

You turned down division 2 basketball...which would've paid for your college...(if that's not the situation then my bad...):yeshrug:

and looking into joining the military...where you have to spend 3, 4 or 6 years of your life with no fukking freedom...and depending on the job...working 12 hours a fukking day...getting treated like shyt half the time since you'll be a lowly E1...

Where as you could've been in college, hooping and fukking bytches...

Couldn't be my son...:francis:

Yes breh, I had several dii offers, but they were all extremely small schools with less than 2000 people in the middle of no where:yeshrug:

I felt the work I was going to have to put in was not worth it.

And also, I feel as a black man there are more things I can do than dribble a ball.

If you decide to join:
Coast Guard > Air Force > Navy > Army > Marines
Do well on your ASVAB, pick a technical job, sign up for all of the retirement services available, save up your base pay, don't do anything stupid or illegal, take classes while you're there (its free), go to networking events, make sure your papers are in order for the GI Bill, check out Yellow Ribbon programmes at different schools, check out the Reserves as well nearby where you think you'd like to go to school. Keep your nose clean, and in 4 years you'll have a full ride + books and room/board paid for, w/ a VA home loan, and retirement savings in your pocket.

Bruh...you just had to a dribble a ball for four years...

Or you could've knocked out some gen ed classes...under a scholarship

Or you could've joined some ROTC program and commission as an officer...and get your school paid for...

What I am saying is...

Either way you gonna give up some shyt...

There are military bases...in the middle of fukking nowhere...and you can't be like..."Well, I don't wanna live here..." you don't even pick...they just give you shyt after A school...

Once you pick your job...you can't be like..."Well I don't like this job..."

Nah nikka it's too late...you gonna report and do that job...

What I am trying to say...you seem like a non-knucklehead smart breh and the military ain't the place for you at this point in your life...

It's hard out here...and I get that...but...

You got a multitude of options...don't do some dumbshyt like enlisting in the military when you could play ball, go into an ROTC program and etc...

Half of the military is fukk ups, quarter of the military is people who didn't know better and the other quarter of the military are patriots...

You would be in the quarter of the military that didn't know better...

You wanna be in the fukk up or the patriot section...

I ain't saying don't join...I am saying don't join when you got a bunch of better options...

Do it bruh. Get a job that’s easily transferable to a civilian job. That is key .....You can fukk bytches and do all that young nikka shyt as welll. But of course you gtta be careful like anywhere else. Just make sure you take advantage of all the benefits they offer (Free Tution, CLEP/DANTES , free courses etc...). Only do 4 years. You will still be young enough to choose any path you want once your enlistment is up. Join the Air Force, it’s your best bet for civilian equivalent jobs and then Navy. Good luck bruh . Probably the best decision I made early on. I’m 29 now and let’s just say I’m am ahead of the game in a lot of aspects of life than a lot of my peers and probably didn’t work as hard to get it(House, job, traveling) . Left active duty in 2013 and been doing great since .

I have to stress again that picking your job is key !!!
