to defend and protect myselfFor what exactly? BJJ is good for getting in shape, comradery, and defense. I don't practice BJJ though, most I have done at a gym is Boxing/thai. I have wrestled for life though so I know what it's like to be among people like that, most BJJ practitioners I have come across were chill people to be around. Definitely going to join a gym when I'm done with school, there aren't any decent wrestling clubs where I live.
Take what you can get locally. You want a gym you can attend at least 3-5 times a week. I believe BJJ is best for defense and your health and it will be a lot easier to compete in the future if you want to do that. I wouldn't suggest taking anything that will involve live sparring (boxing/thai) if you don't plan on competing for money. No point in taking blows to head for free, it's the main reason why I stopped boxing, I had no legit future in the sport. Grappling is a lot safer, you will encounter a lot less weekend warriors.to defend and protect myself
You 36 in a Karate class?
