First of all, who besides middle and high school aged children use the phrase "talking white?" Second, you know damn well that's not what they meant when they said it. Talking white does not mean you sound (as in voice and tone) like a white person. We all know what it means and why it's rooted in ignorance. It's the black version of "you're so articulate." What's even more ironic is that if anyone white had ever suggested such a thing publicly, these very same blacks would be boiling with outrage...there would be hoards of blacks with sticks, bats, pitch forks and torches with marches, and BLM protests lol.


If you continue to describe what being "black" is with such narrow definitions, you automatically subscribe to other narrow definitions of what being black is.

Some blacks have deep voices, some blacks have a high pitch...some blacks speak with slang, some don't, some sound educated while others sound ignorant as fuk....welcome to the real world where not every black is the same . And here I thought this was something that only had to be explained to white people lol.

This is truly where I envy white people and people of other races though....they really can be different (intentionally or unintentionally) without being accused of attempting to be some one of another race by their own. Many whites realize that there are Hillbillys, trailer trash, suburban valley types, and snooty upper class types...all of which differ in tone, accent, and inflection.... and none of which are any less "white" in their opinions.

I'm not really sure where black folks have it written down somewhere where blacks cannot have the same diversity of speech and intonation.

it's true there are articulate black men/women unfairly characterized as sounding "white".

it's also true that there are black people who take on a characteristically white intonation to how they speak, almost as a status symbol to distinguish themselves from other black people.

there are also blacks who grew up in the suburbs who just speak in that manner due to their environment. you can't blame them for that.

at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. i know dudes from the hood i grew up in who speak the way most black folks in urban environments speak casually and are the biggest c00ns. conversely, i know suburban brehs who seem down for the cause but sound a little square. you never know what you'll get. judge your fellow black brehs by their track record and character, not by how they speak

This is the deciding factor to me but I've been told by my family when I was a kid that I talked white because of the words I used. Not surprising since I got a lot of that shyt from TV and added them to my vocabulary.

Sounds like nonsense IMO. I would agree with you if these cultures were isolated and many distances apart with one another, but in the US there is so much overlap and influence in culture from one to the next that it would be impossible not to realize that there would be a diversity of lingual differences...tastes in music, tastes in foods and diversity in political and social thoughts.

And let's be honest here, acknowledging these differences isn't a way to celebrate inclusiveness and diversity within blacks--it's a method of being exclusive, and dmismissive while attempting to implement group-think like tactics. Nothing more, nothing less IMO.

People aren't shaming blacks for not having deep voices they're shaming them for imitating white speak, for instance there are Asian "twinkies" who have grown to imitate whites until it has become normal but they are still referred to as "twinkies" because they are still Asian people who exhibit qualities that are of white culture whether they're trying to or not that is what they're doing. This is the same with blacks. Just because someone grows up with another culture does not mean that they somehow are impervious of "talking white" yeah it may come natural now since they're saturated in that culture but they are still imitating that way of speaking which they benefit from because white culture is the default culture in America.
