say what u want...but i met quik at sxsw at his book of david listenin party..n i asked em about justify my thug..

would have luv to seen footage of guru quik n jay..discussin samples...playin beats n jays reaction like the others...but the names are popular...

guru himself said quik built alot of beats from scratch in front of jay..and had beat cds...like everybody else..4-5days jus quik in the studio makin beats like the death row days..cept he was in new york....that would have been a site to see..

basically quik said jay came to him n dr dre(dre was originally billed to produce on it)..
black-album-promo.png

with rock around the clock...rock box n justify my love madonna..n wanted to see what they could do with it..like everyone else..

said jay stumped everybody with the request..pharrell..just blaze..swizz..timbaland...janye

everybody else came with other shyt..to impress him...but didnt fullfill the request.. quik also did the samething gave played em 2 beats

said the 1st beat jay heard was a song he just released with kk on dubcnn

n 2nd was somethin he used on trauma...

said he liked the first... then came to him with the proposition of the 3 samples he wanted..because he wanted madonna

dre gave up...said dre..told guru n jay...dont give up on quik that easily..he knows his shyt will make it happen...

quik flew back home

quik spent days ...tryin to figure somethin out because he took a break from producin

so he was fukkin around in his stash..came across

got to track 3

2:48 mark

said he called dre....battlecat ..they got to his house..n quik had the beat already done..with it playin

dre n battlecat had the
dr-dre-the-wash.gif

saved it...called guru..quik flew back out to new york..they spent a week in the studio..workin from scratch...quik aint sayin shyt..kuz he got what jay wants...he is also schoolin guru...so he rebuilds the beat...n changed a couple of things from the original.eqd the hell out of it...but its pretty much the same..

jay heard it...quik got on the album...off the strength of givin jay his heartz of men...

after hearin that story..then last yr..guru had this

5:37

i trip out kuz quik knew he had the shyt ready..he jus wanted to chill in new york..

ppl shyt on justify..not realizin it was one song jay wanted..everybody had a task to try n create..

this was jayz detox...

jus like dre has footage..for quik..battlecat..dj pooh 1800 nem all in the studio comin up with heat..

fade to black was that just without quik

samething i did breh...that funkadelic sample didnt even get cleared...quik replayed it..but since he n fuzzy haskins, calvin simon n grady thomas( the only 3 original funkadelic members that were still in the group after glenn died)...were tight n have done sessions together..

they let em have off gp n didnt even worry bout it...but quik bein the dude he is..wanted to make sure they got paid..he split whatever he made between the 3..he jus wanted the accolades of workin with jay..n the plaque

madonna got paid n she flaked out the recordin session at the last minute

yo, thank you so much for this @shopthatwrecks :ohhh::salute::gladbron::wow:
5 stars, dap and +rep :myman:

this is really interestin' to hear. quik in my opinion is the only genius in hip hop. bruh is a scientist with this production:wow:
like i'm truly amazed at how he works and how he puts his projects and music together :mindblown:

i been sayin' for the longest quik had the best beat and production on the whole black album too :ohlawd:
http://www.thecoli.com/threads/i-do...d-the-hottest-beat-on-the-black-album.262464/

i think the brilliance of the "justify my thug" beat and production goes over so many peoples' heads. it's so dense, simplistic yet complex and sinister like a scene out of scarface :damn::whew:

the mixin' on that song is sonically some of the best music i've ever heard. he really shined on that one :wow:

i don't know if you'd seen this interview of quik speakin' on workin' on the song or not but this is a great interview too

i still go back and watch visualism too i could listen to quik talk about music and production all day. he's very knowledgeable when it comes to music

i can only imagine the unreleased music quik got in the vaults that's probably some of the best music we've never heard :ohlawd:

thank you again, bruh. i really appreciate this great read :myman:

man, just readin' this again and i'm like, why is quik so underrated?! like, he's the definition of underrated

he's a producer's producer. knows how to mix with the best of them and can make beats from scratch

how is he not a top 5 hip hop producer of all time?!

quik should've gotten a record deal with eazy e and ruthless records. those years signed to profile records held him back from makin' big moves aside from suge helpin' him out and givin' him some work at deathrow records

it's just like scoop deville said, "quik should've been the original dre"

man, quik is a talented dude
he's the one producer who really amazes me on how he produces. the way he flips, tweaks and makes shyt is just unbelievable

do you know anythin' bout any new projects he workin' on? like the new suga free album? and the new quik album? i remember quik said he was gon title his "the morning after" in an interview for the fader and another site

quik could really help r&b out too.
i'm shocked he hasn't started producin' more outside the genre and helpin' to produce and mix for a who's who of artist even outside of hip hop

oh ok

i agree with r&b bein' non existent

his work with el and james is always great. it would be nice to hear him work with chico. yeah, i remember quik sayin' el's management was keepin' them away from hangin' around each other.

in fact, it was in this interview
http://massappeal.com/dj-quik-talks-the-midnight-life-mpcs-and-the-legacy-of-his-music/

but man, the songs and music those guys work on is always great. i listen to "el's interlude" at least twice a week

that dwele song "find a way" that g won produced and i'm guessin' quik probably did too is a classic. that's some of the sound in music i miss!

yeah, when hip hop became more gained more appeal all across the board, i'd say hip hop was a thing of the past too by 96'. the singers begin to take a backseat to the rappers and it's funny now because now you got a bunch of rappers are singers and can't sing, tryin' to sing :russ:

i could definitely see quik workin' with marsha, jill and raheem. i bet the music would be nothin' but the best :wow:
