Why doesn't El Debarge label fukk with Quik?

quik says el's management must've thought he (quik) was a "bad influence on el debarge"

he spoke on that in a recent interview, he's the excerpt and the link is below it

Mass Appeal: “Hand In Hand” featuring El Debarge was my shyt when that came out. What made you reconnect with him for “That’s N**ger’s Crazy” and “El’s Interlude”?

DJ Quik: I wanted to be on his “Second Chance” album, but his management was kinda keeping us away from each other. They must have thought that I was the devil or a bad influence on El Debarge. Young than El, ya know? I missed that record, but after he changed management for a little bit, he came through the studio like “nikka I still love you, you still my guy.” I’m like “Do you mind lending your voice and energy to my record, just so we can do some R&B shyt?” Harmonies, that’s what R&B is. The new hip hop R&B is not. The whole ‘I love to get on,’ Tinashe, I ain’t dissin’ or nothing, but that’s not R&B. It’s melodic hip hop. With El, he brought me some R&B. Who better to get it from than a Motown legend?

quik gets el back in his ol habits

not really quik..but his circle...they find el in the mix..suga free..infra red..chubbs...they all around snortin lines..n el back to his old habits...

quik knows a coked out el..is a better singer than he is sober..

that was pretty much the whole idea...of the motex record skit

Justify my thug should have been one of Jays biggest club hits.

That beat bangs in the whip son.

Love the label "melodic hiphop". That is exactly what r&b is these days. Perfect description

yo, thank you so much for this @shopthatwrecks :ohhh::salute::gladbron::wow:
5 stars, dap and +rep :myman:

this is really interestin' to hear. quik in my opinion is the only genius in hip hop. bruh is a scientist with this production:wow:
like i'm truly amazed at how he works and how he puts his projects and music together :mindblown:

i been sayin' for the longest quik had the best beat and production on the whole black album too :ohlawd:
http://www.thecoli.com/threads/i-do...d-the-hottest-beat-on-the-black-album.262464/

i think the brilliance of the "justify my thug" beat and production goes over so many peoples' heads. it's so dense, simplistic yet complex and sinister like a scene out of scarface :damn::whew:

the mixin' on that song is sonically some of the best music i've ever heard. he really shined on that one :wow:

i don't know if you'd seen this interview of quik speakin' on workin' on the song or not but this is a great interview too

i still go back and watch visualism too i could listen to quik talk about music and production all day. he's very knowledgeable when it comes to music

i can only imagine the unreleased music quik got in the vaults that's probably some of the best music we've never heard :ohlawd:

thank you again, bruh. i really appreciate this great read :myman:

I hated that beat for the longest until I got a hold of a gang of Quik instrumentals. I played the Justify My Thug instrumental in my ride and it just clicked. Everything you said about the beat describes it well.

Yeah I enjoy listening to Quik talk music and tech. I'm going break out that DVD tonight. :salute:

man, the minute i heard that beat back in 03', i was in complete shock! i couldn't believe just how ahead of the game quik was :ohlawd:

everybody was talkin' bout "encore", "psa", or "allure" (which is a really great and 1 of the neptunes' best) but quik's "justify my thug" was and is by far my favorite from that album. that song stands alone in it's own lane on that album. quik went to the future and back with that shyt :wow:

yeah, that dvd is classic. always a great watch :myman:

Dope story and now listening back to Justify My Thug the thing I don't like about it is the chorus, it's not the best Quik beat ever but it's still nice.

i felt the same way...i liked it more because quik is the only one who built 50-60 beats for jay on the spot..was tellin jays potna guru to make sounds...n he would come with beats off that sound...n jay turned down g-shyt n til jesus come...

then realizin jay gave everybody involve 3 samples..that he wanted for a song...everybody else said fukk that shyt its too complicated but listen to this jay...

quik the only one who took a complicated task like stomach said..n made it simple...yet complex at the sametime..

ppl involved prolly thought quik was usin FL studio..

when quik did whatevery west coast producer would have done..when in doubt...goto funk..

took obscure funkadelic song..slowed it down..eq'd the hell out of it..thru some synths..got a singer who could do a madonna impression..since madonna flaked out...

exactly

jay came to him with a request for a specific song and quik nailed it :wow:

like you said @shopthatwrecks , all them other producers was tryin' to show out and show jay the shyt they already had instead of really tryin' to stick out that challenge that quik won :wow:

"justify my thug" is some next level shyt. i'm listenin' to it right now and it amazes me just how ahead of times this still sounds a decade and some change later

"justify my thug" is timeless, easily the best song the black album in my opinion

@Public Enemies @stomachlines @DaveyDave @jcali all the other quik heads..

finna drop a lil gem..

say what u want...but i met quik at sxsw at his book of david listenin party..n i asked em about justify my thug..

would have luv to seen footage of guru quik n jay..discussin samples...playin beats n jays reaction like the others...but the names are popular...

guru himself said quik built alot of beats from scratch in front of jay..and had beat cds...like everybody else..4-5days jus quik in the studio makin beats like the death row days..cept he was in new york....that would have been a site to see..

basically quik said jay came to him n dr dre(dre was originally billed to produce on it)..
black-album-promo.png

with rock around the clock...rock box n justify my love madonna..n wanted to see what they could do with it..like everyone else..

said jay stumped everybody with the request..pharrell..just blaze..swizz..timbaland...janye

everybody else came with other shyt..to impress him...but didnt fullfill the request.. quik also did the samething gave played em 2 beats

said the 1st beat jay heard was a song he just released with kk on dubcnn

n 2nd was somethin he used on trauma...

said he liked the first... then came to him with the proposition of the 3 samples he wanted..because he wanted madonna

dre gave up...said dre..told guru n jay...dont give up on quik that easily..he knows his shyt will make it happen...

quik flew back home

quik spent days ...tryin to figure somethin out because he took a break from producin

so he was fukkin around in his stash..came across
0.jpg

got to track 3

2:48 mark

said he called dre....battlecat ..they got to his house..n quik had the beat already done..with it playin

dre n battlecat had the
dr-dre-the-wash.gif

saved it...called guru..quik flew back out to new york..they spent a week in the studio..workin from scratch...quik aint sayin shyt..kuz he got what jay wants...he is also schoolin guru...so he rebuilds the beat...n changed a couple of things from the original.eqd the hell out of it...but its pretty much the same..

jay heard it...quik got on the album...off the strength of givin jay his heartz of men...

after hearin that story..then last yr..guru had this

5:37

i trip out kuz quik knew he had the shyt ready..he jus wanted to chill in new york..

ppl shyt on justify..not realizin it was one song jay wanted..everybody had a task to try n create..

this was jayz detox...

jus like dre has footage..for quik..battlecat..dj pooh 1800 nem all in the studio comin up with heat..

fade to black was that just without quik

Myself
I remember not liking track at first.
One day I found myself playing it over and over like 'this actually goes:patrice:

Been a fan ever since, but I can understand why it's one of the least played songs on the album.
