While breaking down their numbers and tape. I have to say both players are some of the most talented players we will have don a Braves jersey, especially Justin who reminds me of a young Barry Bonds with Pitt. But here are my issues with both players.
Justin:
-He is one of the most mistake prone players in Baseball.
-For all his range and coordination, no one has worst misreads and errors statistics in the Major Leagues. It's terrible for a player to misread as much as Upton does.
-Deterring base-runners.
-Taking batting attempts off.
-Being lazy
Justin screams to me a player who is not passionate about the game or does the little things to win games. This can easily change. I seen it two years ago with Jason Heyward who is slightly less talented than Justin. He showed laziness and he worked on it as well as his weight and was 10x a better player for it last season. I personally think Justin issues with Arizona are based off of management, his lack of passion, and not doing the little things. These are all fixable but they are situation type issues more than anything. I seen Martin Prado get into great shape and go from a rotational player to a very good player who started doing all the little things. Prado while talented didn't have the great ability or tools but he worked to become a very good player. Baseball is the most situation based sport of out all of the team sports except Soccer.
Justin who might have the talent, ability, and training skills to be the face of a franchise just isn't one. His defense while great in ability is terrible in the little things which shows he doesn't really care. If in the right situation, Upton can be great but I am not sure I want him to be the face of a franchise. He's more like a Matt Kemp and not a Derek Jeter.
B.J.-
-B.J. is a highly inconsistent player.
-While B.J. can do it all, field, hit, get on base, steal bases, carry a team. He can also get lazy, take games off, have a lapse of concentration and it takes him awhile to get out of slumps.
-While B.J. is extremely talent, he reminds me of David Justice with a worse supporting cast at times.
-B.J. seemed to regress at times when he didn't have the support around him batting.
-B.J. is your typical #3- #5 hitter with elite talent but should never be your face of the franchise. He can become a .280-30-30-100 player with elite defense when he has the role of a role player.
As a Brave fan this is an exciting time for me. We are getting two elite talents but I worry about both of these guys to a degree. They have shown flaws and they both need to work of them. I know most Baseball articles these days are about sabermatrics and other stats but just wanted to leave an opinion instead.
