and thats exactly why you pick the qb only when you have a good skeleton of a team assembled. its much easier to play decent with good team and not so good qb when you miss, than completely tank if you miss a qb on dysfunctional team
take most successful qbs drafted in 1st/2nd right now besides peyton (once in a lifetime specimen) and luck
big ben...drafted by defense/run game team that had success with thrash qbs, great situation
flacco...same thing
matt ryan...arriving to a team with great oline and sick run game, good situation
rodgers...sat behind favre on a good team
kaep...started on a team that was very good after harbaugh, great situation
russ wilson...started on a team that was already very good, great situation
brees...played next to LT, matured in SD, had sean p take him to next level
very few qbs were drafted high up and werent once in lifetime prospects, that changed the scenery when thrown to wolves...cam and eli only come to mind, and it took eli many years, and he was still carried by D, so is cam somewhat.
plugging in a qb to a ready team is far more efficient, and profitable than doing it the other way around....by the time you build a team around the qb youre expected to pay him a fifth of the cap

i'm happy to see kaep get his money and the last couple of drafts were for this very reason. baalke isn't dumb and loaded up on picks to replace players like iupati, crab and any other big name free agent. i trust the 9ers FO.
No ones disputing it's easier to win while the QB is on his first contract at the team is on it's way up. Wee disputing letting him walk and replacing him with a replacement level player...they don't exist.

for a team that is good...like arizona, they paid carson what 4-5 mil with only the third year being 10 mil (and they can cut him and not give him that )
