The people who think MBDTF is a classic are the people who think Jeff Koons is the greatest artist alive or something like Avatar was a great movie

Glossy kitsch shyt that attempts to pander to people who take "art" serious is the lowest kind of art in general

There are about 5 god like songs on that album and the rest is dookie
Who The fukk Is Jeff Koons. You fukking Cac. Go somewhere with this bullshyt. So tired of you mu fukkas man.

imo even better then the album was the moment in time...the hype for this album was immense, a product of kanye capitalizing off the brilliant marketing scheme of good fridays...man half of those were classic, every week the internet was on fire fiending for that new yeezy shyt, and he kept delivering hot track after track, the throwaways and posse cuts were iller then pretty much anything else going on that year

imo complaining that it's overwrought or too extravagant is just being a contrarian for the sake of being one to me, musically the album was undeniably impressive, groundbreaking at the time, prof rap shyt, thematically it's dense, and I think a lot of the craftsmanship went over people's heads

there's always going to be some weirdo old head who wants to rock to epmd or some shyt hating on this because there's a generational gap and they'll never understand, it's whatever to me at this point

Nope. It's a legitimate complaint. It's like a movie that could be perfect but decides to fukk up the pacing by adding a 30 minute intro, 3d when it wasn't needed, and 2 plot twist too many. He didn't strike the right balance and there is filler on the track. The last few track drag on and it isn't a very replayable CD. Haven't listened to it ONCE this year outside of All of the lights and devil in a new dress.

replay value is completely subjective but the craftsmanship that went into that album on a musical level is not

to me the music matches the ego, the scope of it was incredible, the music was lush and lavish like the life he lives, and in the middle of all the grandeur is this guy who is one of the maor egotistical b*stards on the planet, but half the time he's wallowing in his own self loathing

all of the lights is an incredible centerpiece, yes it's filled with all of these pyrotechnics but don't let that overshadow the content, the metaphor for the public love he lost after his famous "ima let you finish" speech, the emotion at the end of runaway, the pure lust at the end of ell of a life, that guitar solo and breakdown on devil in a new dress to the moon and back

nobody in hip hop at the time or right now is fukkig with kanye sonically. he's on a whole different plane. that album was his proof of that. Nobody was making shyt like that complex at the time. Nobody.

2010 was a great year with MBDTF, flockaveli and house of balloons all being classics

"Craftsmanship" is also subjective and has to be contextualized. Kanye is allowed to have high production value because his music budget is 500x that of a normal artist. Kind of like how he complains that he can't make a competitive clothing line because the established brands have all the funds and means of production.

All of the lights is a great track but he isn't saying anything ground breaking on it.

When you say sonically you mean strictly production because Kanye as a rapper is lower tier sonically/ vocally. Waka Flocka had a great rapping voice. Wayne had a great rapping voice. Biggie, Pimp C, Boosie, Z-Ro.... Kanye? You could have put any decent rapper on that MBDTF production and the result would have been the same

I won't fault kanye for using the tools given to him to create something worthy of those tools too, ou know? If that's what's expected of him because he has the budget the superfriends and the creativity then good for him for capitalizing on it

the production is the highlight for me, yes, but he still killed dark fantasy, gorgeous (!!!!), DIAND, power, monster to me vocally he killed those records

and then something like blame game, where what he sacrifices in typical hip hop song writi or lyrical ability" he makes up for and exceeds the boundaries of the genre, presence, songwriting, raw, unfiltered emotion, the classic "come down" from the high of the rest of the album, juxtaposed, the voices in different pitches traveling from one ear to the other, like a conversation, te reality of that situation, the wiring making it so clear that it came from a very real experience, most of these rappers can't fukk with record like that, they'll never hit that level, that transparency via their music, the strength of personality it takes to make a record like that, as opposed to some other bullshi out at the time

traditional rap lyrical ability is like, one of the least important things to me these days

I wasn't speaking about lyrical ability. Outside of LR, Kanye has always been mediocre in that aspect. I'm talking vocally. His voice is uninteresting. Drugged out Wayne had an interesting voice. Kurt Cobain had an interesting voice. Prince has an interesting voice. Kanye is a stand in prop as a vocalist. He is useless and the only way he can make up for it is lyrically. I get bored of his voice like I do Lupe or Fabulous or Meek Mill yelling but those dudes have other aspects to make up for it.

I also hated gorgeous. Like I said 5 or so tracks were amazing but Illmatic was 10 tracks no filler of perfection. I aint so liberal with what I call a classic.

One of his worst albums

Over produced and obnoxious to the point it overshadowed the lyrics
Ross and Nicki murdered him on his own shyt
Album sounds like someone who thinks the better the "art" the more extravagant it is. He pandered to critics with this album.
