Breh, before College Dropout came out, Jay Z was out here saying "If skills sold truth be told / I'd probably be lyrically Talib Kweli." That's major and speaks of how highly Kweli was regarded, but let The Booth tell it, Kweli was Silkk The Shocker status.

Dave Chappelle was out here giving Talib, Mos Def, Kanye, etc. a platform. They all performed at Chappelle's Block Party. Kanye was a part of that circle, so yeah, Kweli helped give Kanye credibility as a rapper.

He brought Kanye on the Electric Circus tour back in early 2003. I swear I was the only dude who knew who Kanye was...seriously it was crickets status when 'Ye grabbed the mic to freestyle.

He gave him instant backpack/everyday man credibility and love from the underground cats when the mainstream cats wouldn't give him a second and couldn't even pronounce his name correctly.

Y’all are both saying exactly what I said. He gave Kanye some exposure and allowed him to perform. However, to the fans who didn’t attend those shows, we didn’t know him and Kweli were tight and didn’t care. The average Kanye fan from the beginning didn’t like Kanye because Kweli co-signed him. I’m sure they basically liked his beats and wanted to hear what his project sounded like, especially after those early leaks. Me being from Chicago, I was checking for him off that as well.

This is true. Talib right or wrong was considered one of the best rappers in the game back then. Not sure I’ve ever seen a rapper’s status drop so far online in 15 years or so

When you say Kweli gave him credibility, what exactly do you mean? I didn’t even know he was down with Kweli until I heard College Dropout. Nobody started listening to Kanye because Kweli gave his stamp of approval. Now if you mean behind the scenes, now that’s another thing.

mos def and kweli were the poster child’s for the back packer real hiphop heads.
If they co-signed you you now went copper instead of triple wood. Cause that 500,000 real hiphop heads would now check for you on the strength.
However Kanye gave kweli his first platinum hit in get by. Let’s not sit here and act like that isn’t more than enough of a thank you. Kanye as a producer in the early 2000’s had like the entire billboard on smash. Everything he did was a fukking platinum hit. Kweli acting like he helped Kanye out ye was making more money as a producer than kweli ever made. Let’s be clear Kanye helped kweli out MORE than kweli helped him. Yes kwel can rap better than him technically but why ye career terractyl donkey shyts on Kweli’s?? Ye raps about everything he raps about.
