You used two bad examples. Thriller and Bad cater heavily to Pop audiences where lyrics take a backseat. You look at Marvin Gaye or Stevie's most acclaimed works and the lyrics are a huge reason those albums resonated.

Even in pop the songwriting matters you gotta say the right catchy shyt.
