Is Malone's defensive worth comparable to Duncan's? If you're answer is no, than what's the point in arguing to what degree how 'good' he was on that side of the court?
:patrice:
didn't you just argue that "offensive margin isn't a wide as you're making it out to be"?

Agreed. Its like they dont know that Karl Malone is tied for the most 1st team all NBA appearances of all time. And he did it an.era of.great forwards..you wanna talk about consistency? Few are as consistent as Malone. Two time MVP..including one in the Jordan era.

Karl was actually a great, not good, but great m2m defender. His post D is the best I've ever seen, used to make people look foolish trying to back him down by pulling the chair, used his quick hands to rip his man, strong as an ox rarely giving up position. Gave TD some serious problems in that '04 WCSF

Problem is TD is a great post defender too and completely outclasses him as a team defender where he's an all time great. So the defense thing isn't something you want to bring up and then there's the offense where Karl seems to be overrated here. No way in hell is he in another class than Duncan offensively. Look at the drop from his regular season efficiency to playoffs and tell me there's not something wrong with that picture. Its one of the biggest declines you'll see from a supposed dominant scorer. He wasn't what his ppg averages would suggest and often failed to live up to his RS effectiveness on the next stage b/c he wasn't a truly great 1on1 scorer, a bit resemblant to David Robinson who had his own struggles in the postseason. And that's why guys like Dirk & Chuck despite not being as good defensively have cases over him. Far more reliable in the PS offensively

I'd take Karl over Barkley easily, but IDK about Dirk :patrice:

I'd take both of them over Karl personally. Big on postseason performances and those two consistently rose to a level that Malone did not as an offensive anchor. Would be willing to overlook his offensive shortcomings by comparison if he were a dominant defender like KG who wasn't a consistent takeover scorer himself, but that isn't the case. If you want to talk all time rather than prime though I can see strong reason for Karl over Chuck given the longevity
