I was wondering the exact same thing. But Jay's been taking shots at NBC on his own show lately - his bosses can't just sit there and take that. I swear this Late Night stuff is crazy.
That has very very very little to do with it. Not sure why people are making a big deal about this. Jay has knocked NBC's ratings regularly in his monologue ever since Friends went off the air.
The real reason Fallon is getting the early nod is that Jimmy K is attracting the younger audience. NBC is afraid that JK is going to take an entire generation of viewers with him as they grow older.
So their only move is to go younger with Fallon now, before it's too late.
I say it may already be too late.
I don't see Jay sitting on the sidelines for long. He'll land somewhere else. FOX? Who knows. And what does CBS do now? Do they risk losing an entire generation of viewers? Who's going to take over for Dave. Do they out the pressure on him now to wrap it up?
The drama behind all of this is better than the actual shows. Anyone remember that HBO movie?
It may be a little overblown about Leno taking shots at NBC's ratings - but then again NBC's ratings have never been this bad. I read somewhere that Univision has passed them now. That's straight out embarrassing. You know some NBC suits have to be pissed at Leno right now. But that's the crazy thing Leno is one of the few bright spots at NBC. And they want to take him off the air??? He will land on his feet as long as he wants to work. And I like Fallon's show -I will DVR it whenever he has a dope musical guest and I'm always surprised how fun his celebrity interviews are. But I don't know if playing games and all that silly stuff will work for the Tonight Show - he will have to change things up just like Conan did. But I agree this late night drama is fascinating - always has been for me since Letterman jumped to CBS.
Brehs lets stop it with the unnecessary Conan O'Brien praise. I get it, we all dislike Jay Leno but Conan started to fall off in 2003/4. Then he got that Tonight Show contract 5 years in advance and I thought alright he lost his interest in Late Night, he's cooking stuff up for the future, I'll give him a pass.
Craig Ferguson was straight up murdering him when it came to the monologue and pissing on his grave with interviews. Kimmel was also stepping his game up with his monologues and use of videos. Conan stayed in his lane and becoming stale, that Finnish President bit was his last hurrah but other than it was pretty unwatchable.
Still I thought, duke was just laying low getting ready for that Tonight Show and then he came out there like a shot fighter. Not only did he bring his same old boring style but even further neutered it in an attempt to cater to 11:35 audiences and completely played himself.
Lets face it brehs he fell off. He's getting murked by Stewart, Colbert and Adult Swim at 11 now. Putting up Ferguson numbers, who is on at 12:35, hour and a half later.

Turned on Fallon tonight and caught the end of the tonight show w/ Jay talking about Dwayne...guess he went on his fellow Republican's showAt their best..Conan was unstppable. Pimpbot 5000 was legendary but Kimmel got hot too. Fallon? I dont watch him.

I think we all forget who REALLY got screwed over in this whole fiasco.
George Lopez.
Because he likes to. Jay Leno is a known workaholic.
Gotta respect that hustle. And I don't get the hate for Leno on here or the hamster either. Yeah he isn't a hipster or hang out with Justin Timberlake but Jay is old school. He is like the Johnny Carson type. I don't like this new movement of trying to turn the Tonight Show into TLR or some shyt. Save that for MTV.
