It wasn't even close to comparable though. The VAST majority of input anyone got on MJ during his career was from pro-NBA media figures who were paid to promote the product and his own corporate sponsors who paid to build up his image. The amount of air time given to questioning shyt wasn't even 5% of the space of the airtime given to building up the product. That was true for all players back then but it was especially true for MJ because Nike put so much effort into building up his line as a giant cash cow. Back in the day, pretty much the only time you ever saw negative takes dominate was when local media turned on a player, and even that didn't last if they won.


It's the complete opposite now. Everyone's attention is dominated by social media, internet message boards, and sports talk shows that thrive on manufactured conflict and controversy. The pro-NBA and pro-corporate folk are still there but their space in the system has shrunk considerably. Even local media can barely affect a player's perception the way cable and the internet can. Whole ecosystem has become MUCH more negative than it used to be.

It’s harder when it’s a part of the lifestyle of practically everyone in your era. Athletes today have grown up with it.
