The sports news media is way more critical of everything these days, it wouldn't have raised his "legend" because the media would've picked him apart about it.

Social media just provides a platform for haters like you to band together and create narratives to discredit a player.

In Jordan's era he had haters too but they were disconnected and didn't have a touchstone like Skip and an online network to spin narratives at each other to adopt and run with.
