this somewhat happened to me last year, my department was making cuts and i was one of them could have got 4 weeks for every year (i was there 6 years) or transfer to another department

I transferred to another department.

Some people actually have careers and jobs where 6 months severance might be a lot, but a steady paycheck + benefits is getting rarer and rarer these days.

i remember when i was offered, it was a thursday and I had to decide by monday,

a few people took the package but they were there for 20 years and getting 4 weeks salary for every year.
