Drake has a very conversational style of lyricism that lends itself to very mundane writing that isn't poetic and is very surface level. He's about as good of a writer as John Grisham is. Meaning, not good. Stale, and very popular because it's easy to digest. You aren't going to get evocative lyricism (Nas) or witty lines (Hov) or elaborate storytelling (Kendrick). You're going to get some millennial truisms that rhyme well.

There are some great songs on Scorpion but I'm not sure any are great due to the lyrics or "quotables." The last track on side A comes to mind though. I like the segment that begins with "I know a girl who went to Rome..." for instance. But even that, while interesting, doesn't reach beyond a surface level. Like Grisham, Drake is unable to bring CHARACTERS to life, or present people as more than a surface 2D painting for his point. Think about...Shorty Doo Wop from One Love, or Sasha Thumper from Art Of Storytelling. Or Keisha from Keisha's Song. Think about the way each person came alive through rhymes. The way they look, the way they live, the way they think, their hopes, dreams, anecdotes, etc. Think about the way GKMC is designed entirely around bringing multiple people to light and life. And then think about the way Drake attempts this, especially with women in his songs.

John Grisham sales a lot of books. But he'll never win a Pulitzer. And neither will Drake.

Excellent Post.... I think this in a nutshell is what stops Drake from being a "great" rapper

This I can somewhat agree with if Kendrick was going to win it should’ve been for TPAB or GKMC but it is what it is
