The first Hip hop pulitzer should have been before Kendrick, I would say it should have gone to like Nas or Pac or Cube etc, but that was the 90s and rap still wasnt quiet there.
But it should have gone to an album like College Dropout. The merit the Pulitzer community used for DAMN. Can be applied for this album.
Which has a great narrative and showing of avg nonstreet black life(which is huge given this came out during the dominant times of gangsta/street rap) and college black life elements.
So Kanye should have been the first Pulitzer winner imo.
As for Kendrick he def should have won this with GKMC, DAMN is just a pop version rehash of GKMC. and its his worst release.
Perhaps, either way Pulitzers really dont mean much nor are they everything, they can be just like the Grammys: where they can be rigged/orchestrated, political, and bias.
Stephen Adly Guirgis is a pulitzer winner and he even said Pulitzers dont matter. Plus there are books/novels that are not nominated or runner ups that are said/and are to be better then the actual ones that won.
Pulitzers just dont get the limelight shown on them like the grammys because well obviously music and music awards are more popular and focused on by people. Plus they aren't as bad as Grammys.
But like Grammys they can be to White
7 statistics that prove the Pulitzer Prize has a diversity problem as big as the Oscars'
So this here is similar to the Grammy wins, as you were saying.
Political/orchestrated. Plus a opportunity for them to take a step in the right direction on their issues with diversity (similar to the Grammys)
