Kendrick is following the Kanye blueprint. Love it or hate it, each Kanye album sounds different. His first 3 albums had 3 distinct sounds. 808s and Heartbreak changed music. And then on MBDTF he basically brought all his styles together. While each Kendrick album has some type of narrative/concept, the MUSIC is different. Sec80 had a very lush sound that mixed jazz and boom bap. GKMC mixed live instrumentation with west coast vibes and trap. TPAB was a drastic shift to jazz and funk. And now DAMN. feels like a a melding of boom bap, trap, and some older sounds (reversed drums).

BP3 was a collection of all the artists who are hot, and meshing their styles with Hov trying to rap like a young dude. MCHG was a wack attempt at trap. BTW this isn't the first time Jay has chased trends...he did the same on Vol 1 when he tried to make a Biggie album.
