Kendrick's situation is different. It doesn't look like Kendrick has a regular record deal with UMG. It looks as if Kendrick is just licensing his music to UMG (they may have first refusal or something to that effect) allowing him to move like an independent artist and still take advantage of UMG's distribution/marketing arm.
As far as dropping without a rollout. Kendrick has a massive social media following, even though he is no longer active on social media, he's never lost credibility with his fanbase. He can drop a single on his social media platforms, and his social media reach and fan activity will make the song go viral. That's literally all he did during the entire beef.

Oh I know that Kendrick's contract is a distribution deal, I'm saying Drake wants it cause he's gonna try to angle for the same thing more than likely.
Most definitely agree on Kendrick's social media presence and to add, he doesn't give you loosies or hop on random shyt a lot. He stays silent and then he'll jump of a metro record and the hype of him coming out gets people excited.
Drake does the opposite to the point where even some of his fans are like, "dawg take a break for a bit".
Drake oversaturated the market.
Here’s the thing, whether its real or not, Kendrick was able to seize upon the fact that the PUBLIC would question it, if not outright believe it, based upon Aubrey’s past actions. Everything Kendrick said about him is, at the very least plausible. Cosmetic surgery, multiple b*stard children, cultural appropriation, uncomfortable interactions with underaged girls, ghostwritten songs, all the way down to sharking the wave of an entire region (The South) was ALL something people looked at Drake funny about. Kendrick just piled it all into one record that not only made Aubrey look lame and corny, it made him look sinister. Its why the beat is so infectiously dark, the flow is almost sad, its like watching a horror movie.
