To be honest I’m shocked his first week sales are that low. When the album dropped, Apple Music and Spotify CRASHED because so many people were online at the same time searching and/or playing the album.

That shyt NEVER happened before, even with Aubrey. So I thought Fosho his numbers would be around the 350K-400K.

But to break streaming records and only sell over 286K is just :mindblown: to me.

I guess if he would have put “The Heart Part 5” on there as a bonus track and had physical copies the day of he would have easily been over 300K but :yeshrug:

But I guess Kendrick and his people didn’t want the album to leak in anyway so that’s why they held back on releasing the physicals cause it would have 100% leaked cause that’s what happened when “DAMN.” dropped.

Still don’t hurt the music..it is what it is :obama:

What makes you say this?

Streaming is king it makes up the vast majority of sales nowadays.

Let’s be real dude took too long to drop and the public isn’t feeling dude like that especially the younger generation.
I don't think him taking his time had anything to do with it honestly. The jits will listen to whatever is trending. YouTube channels, Twitch streamers, social media, etc all reacted to this album and some of the tastemakers for the young gen didn't mess with it so...The album isn't geared towards "bangers" like DAMN plus it's even more TPAB-esque than TPAB lol so of course the younger gen isn't going to feel it. He easily does 500k imo if he released an album equivalent to DAMN.

I'll admit it was a lil jarring to see a young breh, maybe 20-21, react to a song from the album and say verbatim "I didn't know Kendrick had so many fans like this" because so many people were requesting him to react to different songs. Like damn, Kendrick been gone for this long?

this 100% but as I said before, there are no real radio/top 40 potential tracks on this album

Kendrick sold 300k physical albums for DAMN. He’s one of the modern day artists that fans actually buys their physicals
That was 2017. It's 2022. DAMN is the last rap album to go plat off physical copies. May not happen again in our lifetime.

Do I think they should have had physicals available instead of being focused on leaks? Yes. DAMN had physicals and didn't leak until the last day. But they clearly wanted no info out before the album dropped. That was their decision so IMO you can't use it as an excuse. They wanted this.

Getting 30mil views on a track (that's not on the album) and then doing less than 300k isn't a good thing. This works if the album had more tracks for casuals to return to. We'd be talking about 320-350k sold if this was DAMN/GKMC type shyt.

For context Adele sold 660k, with 560k of those being pure physical sales I believe.

I'm shocked at how low it is, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as the bundles running seem to have rough roughshod over the industry over the past however many years. Eventually I'd like to get to a point where we as hip hop fans no longer even really have these discussions. Do you think Harry STYLES fans go online and discuss sales? Probably not

U hit it.

Taking time off has nothing to do with it. People were anticipating the new Kendrick heavy even with his time off.

Fact is he just didn't come with an easily digestible album. I fukk w/ Kendrick heavy but I'm not rocking w/ this album. Replay value ain't there and you can't listen to this shyt at the gym, at a party, driving down the highway.. like to me I can't really figure out who this album was actually made for.
