There was a lot buzz surrounding the album after its release and the responses were either you really enjoyed the album or you really hated it. A lot of breakdowns of the album with different interpretations and theories. Been sitting with the album for the past few days. If I could use in word to describe the album it would be "nuance". The album is filled with nuance. The outro beat on Blacker The Berry, the outro verse on Momma, the Spanish housekeeper knocking on the door on "u" while Kendrick is wallowing in self pity in an alcoholic type rage, the vocals leading up to Rhapsody verse on Complexion, the build up in the production on King Kunta. That's just scratching the surface.

So how does everyone feel about To Pimp A Butterfly today?

The road less traveled.
The album grew on me. I was disappointed at first because I was looking for another story like GKMC, then I had to come to the conclusion that was a one time project and he ain’t giving us that again.

These Walls is one of my favorite Kendrick track all time.

Problem with the album is there are a lot of annoying repetitive sounds through album and a lot of garbage tracks.

2.5/5 for me

Kendrick Lamar EP and GLMC are his only classics IMO

Extinct
Honestly:patrice:, the album was a high 7 at best looking back at it. While I loved the album when it first came out, it's dated as all hell:francis:.

  • The album was pretentious as all hell
  • The theme was all over the place
  • Half of the album was boring as all hell
  • Kenny did some sucker ass shyt behind the scenes (playing FlyLo for his beats)
Section 80>>>>>TPAB on the real:manny:

Don't Believe the Hype
I'm always like this, but when an album drops, it takes me a while to appreciate everything about it. Also, when folks call something "classic" the f*cking NIGHT it drops, I have a difficult time believing the hype. Part of "classic" is timelessness.

That said, I think I'm appreciating the album more as time goes on.

Still my favorite Kendrick album, but crazy it's already been 3 years. Feels like it just came out last year. Maybe because I don't like/listen to Damn.

DAMN was ordinary on a lyrical tip for someone of Kendricks caliber it gave me a greater appreciation for TPAB. The verses were so heavy all over this. Not many wasted bars. That last verse on These Walls:wow:

Speaking on These Walls you can't tell me that shyt sound like it could've featuredRapper Big Pooh and Phonte. shyt replace Bilal with Darein Brockington and that's a real Little Brother collabo.
