There's no value in lying to kids, it's an exercise in kicking a can down the road and one day she'd have to account for lying to her son.

Nobody just becomes toxic and abusive overnight. She either laid down with someone she didnt know (one night stand etc) or she CHOSE to have a baby with a guy she knew was a toxic loser or a bum. In either case thats on her and her poor decision making.
Its almost impossible these days for a kid that old not to know ANYTHING about his dad unless the woman doesnt know or is deliberately keeping the kid away. Even if he was deadbeat if the courts were invlovled there would be some level of engagement or the kid would have at least heard about their dad (Even if it was just the mother complaining he aint paying child support on time)
