I'm in here like :mindblown: because I don't know any other way to do it

Anybody clearly older than you get the "Mr./Ms." treatment

Your parents? :sheeeeeeeit:

I honest to God couldn't tell you how many times I've actually said my mother's name out loud without " 's son" behind it :russ:

You just don't do it

This.

I'm 6'7 240. Grown as hell and Its still mister and miss to elders off my upbringing and for all I've accomplished so far im still "just" (my moms first name)'s little boy in convos.

I ain't ever gonna be dumb enough to challenge that label :whoa:. It's a respect thing forever. I can count on one hand the combined times I've referred to my mom and pops by their first names.

As an aside, does anyone know where this tradition comes from?

We definitely do it in the south, and I know in black families, we attribute it to being a sign of respect and all..

But when I really think about it, why is adding "ms" and "mr" in front of a person's name like that considered a sign of "respect"?

To other posters who could add something to this point, is this a tradition in other cultures (non-American), too?

All my friends kids just call me Manny. Ain't trying to be all formal and everything. Leave that for business, not friends and family. :dahell: I look like having a snot nosed little kid coming up to me like, "Mr Manny, can I have more please?":feedme: :dame:

I call my parents mom and dad

My mom brothers don't want me calling them uncle ..we're real close(hit the strip clubs, talk about hoes and hang out)

and I told my niece to call me by my name and she doesn't have to say yes sir /no sir

I'm just informally formal. Like if you're 35 and you tell me you're name is Andy or Tommy chances are I'm calling you something else like Drew or T. If you try to be on some prim and proper shyt "my name is Mr. Brown or Dr. Jones." I'm gonna call you be your first name or a short name that I assign.

My niece and nephew call me and my brother by our first names. They were also born when I was really young and being Tia @September at 9 years old was not gonna fly for me.

I like to piss my dad off by calling him by his first name when he ignores me but I gotta be quick with the feet cause he usually gives me the

Folks tallbout this cac shyt don't know much about the hood, this more common than you think.

My cousin does that with his mom whos also my cousin, she had him when she was a freshman at JSU and thus it was more so my aunt, his grandmother that raised him than his mom. This is fairly common in homes where the parent had the kid young and the grandparents are the ones doing major haul of the parenting.
