Both Spurs and Clippers had better rosters but Lakers offered the most money.

Not a contender, but good enough to make the playoffs. Mihm had potential, Atkins was decent, Brian was decent his last year in Miami and Divac was still a good player when we signed him. Kobe would have signed with the Clippers if he thought we would've missed the playoffs that year. Buss promised him he would do everything in his power to build a contender. It wasn't just about the money. Before the coach retired and Kobe and Lamar went down with injuries we were the 6th seed in the West.
