even though he has more first team all defense than Lebron and Rightly so, I'll say in his prime, he was still severely underrated because his off ball defense didn't consist of cowardly weakside chase down blocks and steals leading to flashy power dunks.

Thats because he was Laker's number 1 offensive player. Players who are elite offensive players like to have a break on defense. They usually guard the worst player on the other team.

When shaq left, he had the burden of carrying the offensive load for the Lakers, if he had to play defense too ,it would have been difficult.
That is what made him so overrated. He was given credit for being an elite defender even when he was just standing around and waiting for his team to get the ball back.

You're an overrated person and poster. You just stand around waiting for Kobe related threads just to chime in with unwavering hate. You mainly get daps on Kobe hate. Overrated poster.

That's why his defense is overrated. How you getting handed 1st-team all-defense when you guarding the worst player on the other team???

:childplease:Top 15 all-time in steals

Bean was a monster in the passing lanes.

Not many guys gonna play 20 seasons and not get top-15 in steals. He not even averaging 100 steals a season.

Lebron gonna pass Kobe up on steals just 16 seasons in, and Lebron didn't play nearly as much free safety in his career as Kobe done been.

Allen iverson? Tracy mcgrady?

:dahell: :dead:

Breh, in the 2001 Finals Iverson scored THIRTY in the first half of Game 1 with Kobe guarding him. They had to put Tyronn Lue in to get Iverson under control.

Iverson averaged 36ppg that Finals even with Lue being used on the regular to relieve Kobe of the guy he couldn't handle. :heh:

In 2008, a 33yo Iverson on the verge of falling off still averaged 25 and 5 against Kobe on 43% shooting. :yeshrug:

Kobe and McGrady never met in the playoffs. But during McGrady's 2001-2005 prime before the injuries, he averaged 28.3ppg on 45% shooting and 40% from three against Kobe.

better 1v1 defender than Lebron :blessed:

On 2s maybe. Not against 1s, 3s, 4s, and 5s.

But you never mentioned that in your original post though. Point is, though there were people got past him, just like TD got at KG. Jordan had some low defensive games.
Thanks for proving my other point though because those nikkas(AI, mcgrady)were able to get to the rim without worrying about shaq

That only meant that somebody else on the team was better than him
I think you misunderstood what I said. A 1st team is a Team not just kobe obviously. All your "point" means is somebody on that 1 all D team was better than him. Nothing more or less

Let's call it what it is.

Kobe Bryant was a tremendous defender when he was very engaged in it, particularly in his younger years. As he got older and took even more of the offensive responsibilities he simply took off more and more defensive plays, guarded the lesser of the perimeter players, and mostly just played passing lanes. He still had an ability to turn up on defense in certain pockets but he couldn't do it the full game.

This is what happens to damn near every elite player during their career after a while. We've seen it happen to LeBron James. We're (likely) going to see Kawhi Leonard's defense fall off slightly more this coming season and over the next few years (unless San Antonio adds another playmaker). We saw the opposite with Kevin Durant last year as he didn't have to carry as much of an offensive load.

Really, the only thing that happened to make people hate on it is that the writers kept giving Kobe All-NBA Defense votes even though he clearly increasingly stopped giving a damn about that side of the ball.

That's been his gimmick for a long time. He'll talk about how pathetic stans are, but he's been doing damn near the same as the stans. Only difference is it's hate instead of love
