Jordan wasn't getting defensive awards off reputation as a Wizard and while Pippen often guarded the other team's best player by design, Jordan was still a good defender. I think he could have fallen off the 1st team in the last year or two of the Bulls 2nd 3peat though

As for LeBron, his name pretty much disappeared from the defensive teams once the media started voting, even though people here like to argue LeBron's defense is overstated by the media.

Kobe is in a league of his own when it comes to being overrated defensively.

Kobe was an elite defender when he decided to shut his man down.. he got more bodies than a Chinese cemetery.. he roamed a lot in his later years but he still shut down the passing lanes when he took his team to 3 straight Finals without Shaq in the West. Man was a 9X all defensive first team member so yeah he isnt average like some of these haters would like to believe.

DPOY has always been voted on by just the media (who don't know shyt about the game). While the All-Defense teams used to be voted on by the coaches when Kobe played. And the coaches know good defense better than the retarded media.

Let's call it what it is.

Kobe Bryant was a tremendous defender when he was very engaged in it, particularly in his younger years. As he got older and took even more of the offensive responsibilities he simply took off more and more defensive plays, guarded the lesser of the perimeter players, and mostly just played passing lanes. He still had an ability to turn up on defense in certain pockets but he couldn't do it the full game.

This is what happens to damn near every elite player during their career after a while. We've seen it happen to LeBron James. We're (likely) going to see Kawhi Leonard's defense fall off slightly more this coming season and over the next few years (unless San Antonio adds another playmaker). We saw the opposite with Kevin Durant last year as he didn't have to carry as much of an offensive load.

Really, the only thing that happened to make people hate on it is that the writers kept giving Kobe All-NBA Defense votes even though he clearly increasingly stopped giving a damn about that side of the ball.

When Kobe played only the coaches were allowed to vote for all-defense.

You think the media was gonna give Kobe anything? They hated that nikka.

Only people who play or coach the game respect Kobe like that.
