he's definitely calling out all the Souls clones
if souls clones weren't so cheap to make, you wouldn't see a dozen every year

this is more about the AAA shyt

"He recalls visiting a big-name studio to advise on a new stealth game and being deeply unimpressed by what he saw. “People who are making military games, they probably don't know how to dismantle a gun or shoot a gun,” Kojima says. “So that's kind of sad.”

This is a shot straight at Ubisoft's slop too

:yeshrug: Do people actually want “new/different experiences” or more of what they’re used to but good? Because damn if you do something different and damn if you don’t.

They in the tokon thread crying about how it’s not mvc lmao

After a while we really gotta be honest. Most of the gaming audience don’t want new shyt.

At best they want something familiar in a new wrapper

FGC fans cry about everything. its the culture

'different bad' is people acting like they saw the dragon age veilguard trailer and thought it would be anything other than hot garbage :francis:

the developers knew that shyt was hot ass when they were drawing it up. or better yet starfield going all in on straight mid on an old engine.

That's just how it goes. Studios make alot of money and stick to their guns. It wasnt always like this.. I think the rise of metacritic may play a factor. Most of the current big budget gaming industry can be traced back to Resident Evil 4. All you need is one studio to jump and others will follow.

increased development costs have an effect on the risk studios/publishers are willing to take. the more money you spend to make something, the more certainty you want it will sell a base X number of copies. it's that simple, and it's largely the reason why you see so many sequels, remasters and remakes instead of burgeoning new IP (outside of indies and shyt)

graphical arms race contributed heavily to this. studios be doing stupid shyt like fukking spending millions of dollars on character polygon counts and useless shyt adding peach fuzz, hair follicles and detailed eye irises to character models - shyt that only basement dwellers care about and will notice for two seconds when they zoom in on characters - instead of innovating or at least iterating on the application of gameplay mechanics and gameplay feel - got dev time and costs through the roof

i get it, it's easier to advertise graphics than gameplay feel, but chasing hyper-realism got this industry super stale

Too much money and manpower involved for people to take big risks anymore. Maybe AI will one day change it.
