He was genuinely in danger, if that's what you mean. But a lot of the encounters were set up. I've known guys who worked on the sets, catching stuff and letting it go in the right places so he could "find" it on camera.
90% of nature shows are like that, using zoo animals, releasing prey right in front of predators, acting fake excited to find something when you just saw your buddy let it go there, driving lemmings off of cliffs for the spectacle, etc. Planet Earth is a rare exception - that one is all legit.
