People who shoplift for the most part are dead broke. You dont care about punishment if you struggling to eat
So if you had a store, you’d give away your stuff to every poor person? If someone was repeatedly stealing from you, wouldn’t you want them to face a consequence? Being poor doesn’t excuse you from accountability.

You obviously don't know how court works.

This doesn't mean that your court case gets dismissed, dumbass. This just means you don't sit in jail for pretrial.
and if you just get arraigned an released, why would you stop? In Philly u don't even get charged if its less than $500. These new laws favor criminality

Therein lies the public's issue with bail reform. You think it stops at release.

Defendants get placed into programs to stop criminality. Idiots think it's Disneyland. I can tell who favors businesses and would lick a boot the first chance they get.

If there were harsher punishment for shoplifting, fewer people would do it.

Extra judicial punishment for petty, non-violent crimes? There is no justice in that and the likely hood of such a person being released and committing a violent crime is high.

Instead of harsher punishments that will likely increase the recidivism rates we should take a better approach.

"A 2013 meta-analysis of educational programs for adult inmates found that reducing recidivism through education works very well – inmates who took part in educational programs while incarcerated had a 43 percent lower chance of recidivism than inmates that did not participate in educational programs.

"Furthermore, the meta-analysis, which was sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, revealed that each dollar spent on education for inmates saved four to five dollars on the costs of incarcerating an inmate again later on."

"Even very basic education, like adult literacy and basic skills, can significantly reduce the rate of recidivism. Allowing inmates to finish their high school diplomas, learn a trade and technical skills, and pursue post-secondary educational opportunities while incarcerated can greatly reduce recidivism as well.
