All is void if these "lyrical" rappers ain't getting mainstream shine. If I'm not hearing Jay Rock and Nipsey Hussle music on the radio then it doesn't matter.

If all im seeing is dumbed down mumble rap getting the biggest mainstream push then that other shyt don't matter.

Young up and coming lyricists needs to see and know that putting forth an effort in your lyrics can get you a mainstream look also.

Several people talked about the existence of a new generation of rappers who put a primacy on intelligent lyrics, in the vein of Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Tunji Balogun, RCA’s Senior VP of A&R, mentioned J.I.D. and Isaiah Rashad as examples:

“There’s a group of lyrical, introspective, forward-thinking rappers that are somewhat overlooked,” he tells me. “[They] aren’t really on the charts and aren’t really on the radio yet, but are garnering a lot of fans and growing quickly and selling tickets. A lot of them are just one song or one or two smart moves away from hitting the mainstream.”

This position is seconded by Randall “Sickamore” Medford, who has an equivalent job to Balogun’s at Interscope, and prior to that helped shepherd the careers of Travis Scott, YG, and Lil Durk.

Sickamore thinks that young fans—he mentions college students in particular—will want “super-conscious” rap to help them deal with Trump’s America. He shouts out Noname, Smino, and, like Balogun, J.I.D.

“Those college kids are tired of the retarded rap, the druggie rap, the Future rap,” Sickamore explains. “They're gonna want something else. They're gonna want somebody with a lot of substance.”

that mumble rap shyt never sold. NEVER. they are signing these fools to 360 deals strictly off their ability to make money in publishing/radio play, reality shows, endorsements. These mfs aren't selling. When you see shyt like Future going multi platinum, don't forget streaming is factored in "sales" and no one makes money off streaming but the streaming services. So music isn't being sold anymore cuz they can't make money off physical cds and itunes like that from rap, so they sell the illusion that an album is selling millions when in reality it's not. Labels aren't selling music anymore, they're selling you artists. Because back in my day(I know you young guys hate that phrase) We'd hear an artist on the radio or on a tape from someone and wouldn't know what they looked like for months if we hadn't seen the video or pic in a magazine. I had no idea Eazy E was a little light skinned dude with a Jerry Curl. .

Getting that one hitta quitta and of one of those acts actually takes off they still win cause the label still gettin most of the check

You also have to remember that some of these dudes aren't able to make radio singles, or continually disappoint on the charts.... that's why they're not on the radio.

like it or not, a lot of these songs you hate are perfect for the radio, catchy beat, easy lyrics.... not hard to sing along to, perfect for the club.


understanding how to weave in dope lyrics with songs that will perform well on the radio isn't exactly an easy thing to do.

Jay Rock has been outrapping Kendrick on tracks since like 2008....and nobody seems to notice.
