People make a big deal about the lack of black American starting pitchers in the game; but there aren't that many black fielders either.

Why do most black athletes gravitate towards basketball and football instead of baseball? Why waste a good three years of your career playing for free in the NCAA when you could be earning dollars playing the minors and have a better shot of reaching the majors and potentially earning a lot of money (since there's no salary cap) in baseball?

Discuss.

In Humboldt County, from Oakland
I think it could be a number of reasons. It wouldn't hurt to have more youth baseball leagues in inner cities, so that the youth in our community can appreciate the game early on. Also people claim that baseball is too boring and slow-paced, but once a person starts following it closer (and especially play in a game), that feeling will start to change. A game can be changed just by one bad pitch or one swing of a bat, and there is a lot of strategy involved such as stealing 2nd base to avoid a double play, when to use the bullpen, or bunting in order to advance a runner.

- you don't make good money in the minors.
- you can stay in the minors for a long time and you're stuck until they want to fool with you,
even if they suck (ask Kris Bryant).
- I don't know of anyone who "makes a big deal" about the lack of black starting pitchers.

1) Making any money is better than making no money re: minors vs NCAA
2) Getting into the league from college isn't a guarantee as well. And earning money in the minors is more lucrative than the living many former college athletes have.
3) There have been many articles written on the subject.

There are blacks in baseball; they just speak Spanish.

Pretty sure I mentioned black Americans in my post.

Oh - you can make money as a college athlete...you're just not "supposed" to. lol
And again, depending on your sport that can only be one year and you can be a big deal after that.

To illustrate,
Many people know who Jahlil Okafor is and his path is pretty much laid out.
Conversely, not many people know who Bubba Starling is - and may not know for a few years.

i played baseball all the way up thru high school. the shyt is boring if you just watchin and its expensive to start compared to basketball.

you need a full 9 on 9 for baseball to really be baseball but with basketball you can play 1v1 2v2 3v3 on just half of a court. hell you can play 21 with 3-4 people.
