I think Vandross is Dutch. The weirdest surname I can think of on an afram has to be Chuck D. It's like some type of German-Jewish name:dahell:

Carlton Douglas Ridenhour

That is true. I never met a black person, or anyone else, with the "Ridenhour" surname.

I had an elementary school principal named Metoyer. Creole, AKA, always wore pink and green.

For real.....George Washington was the last white person in history to have his surname. We dont know anything about his (fully white) kids he had with his formaly white wife :ohhh: .

But he had a ton of kids with black female slaves and have a ton of black people with his surname :mjpls:

If you could believe it, I'm actually a descendant of Samuel Washington, George's brother. My ancestor did not take the Washington name. He took the name Hatfield and in later generations it evolved to Hatter.

From the white side, I only knew of the name Custis. But there are about 5 or 6 separate black families that descend from the Washingtons. None of them took the Washington name that I know. The most famous of these families are the Syphaxes.

Yeah we got them from ante-bellum white families but I haven't came across any whites in the 2000s with those names. I almost felt like white families with those names went extinct.

Only knew one Jenkins as a kid. He was definitely southern. The Dallas County judge is Clay Jenkins (dad was Warwick Jenkins so you know there's gotta be some Civil War blood around there somewhere).

Only white Williams I can even think of is that actress Michelle....

Smith and Jones seem common among white AND black people.

Freeman makes sense because many of our ancestors gave THEMSELVES that name after slavery ended (Freeman = Freedman = Freedmen etc).

Washington and maybe Jefferson are probably the two blackest names out there. I have never met a non-black Washington and don't remember any Jefferson's either.

Interesting.

I went to school with two unrelated White Freemans...

...but you can tell one of them had something else on his tree.

Yep, I was about to come in here and say this and especially down south. I'm black but I have a few ancestors that were "passing" for various legal and illegal reasons back then :mjpls:

A lot of them in my family had the last name of "Freeman" so there are some that identify as black, some identify as melungeon, and some identify as white.
