97-04- his teammates were trash. Like Cavs '07 level. I dont know where it started that he had elite squads his whole career.
Robinson had one good year left during this time before turning into a role player with a bad back who missed lots of games. Sean Elliott got sick and missed lots of time also.
They had a bunch of old vets on the way out like Mario Elie, Avery Johnson, and Jaren Jackson that saw many key minutes. Steve Kerr and Danny Ferry managed to stay on the team til '03.
Young guns that only stayed a a year or two like Antonio Daniels, Stephen Jackson and Derek Anderson. They all left for bigger money before a young core could develop.
Sloppy Big men rotations including Malik Rose and old Kevin Willis to give Duncan a "breather". I saw plenty of games where the lead would evaporate once he sat on the bench.
Every big name they went after said no and the big key acquisitions ended up being guys like Rasho Nesterovic and an old Steve Smith.
Parker came in but wasnt shyt yet. Manu was off then bench and pulled from the lineup at times still trying to adjust to the NBA game.
Pop had no system. Phil coached circles around him. If Duncan wasnt quarterbacking everything with his feel for the game and calm demeanor the team would fall apart.
Eventually parker and ginobli became good and members of the big three but even during those years they didnt have much after those 3 and Bowen.
His deepest squads came after he started to decline.
