First of all, athletes and entertainers are not supposed to be political leaders. At most, they can use their influence and resources to help bring change.
But because we live in a society of celebrity/wealth worship people like LeBron are considered pillars in community when that’s a burden that’s unfairly placed. I think if an athlete wants to be socially active that’s fine but there shouldn’t be too much stock put into it. For all the good things people bring up for LeBron, there are still moments of inconsistency. But those moments of inconsistency could have just as much to do with the fact that he’s placed on an unreasonable pedestal.
People like Robeson, Ali, Nip, and Pac are celebrated because they were glitches in the matrix. They were celebrities, athletes and entertainers, whom for all intents and purposes had made it far enough in life to have something to lose. But time and time again they placed their principles above material wealth.
For most, that’s too impossible a task even if their heart means well. People aren’t so rah rah when they have a family to take care of. Or if they have goals which require them to pick and choose their responses. I say all that to say that unless an entertainer truly proves themselves to be a person willing to risk it all for what they believe in we should just take their gestures for what they are, just gestures.
As for LeBron in this situation, wish he would’ve kept silent given the sensitivity of the HK protests in general. Plus putting himself in the mix helped take Morey off the hook. As a megastar, he’s a much bigger target to attack and him speaking up for HK or PRC wasn’t gonna be worth it for him. As if any Chinese on that side gave a fukk about what Black People go through here in America or in other parts of the world. But he’s right to say that Morey spoke without considering the possible ramifications. Of course, it also looks like he’s protecting his Chinese bag (like the rest of the NBA is trying to do) but again it goes back to what I was saying, if you aren’t a glitch in the matrix kinda celebrity then it’s no reason to take you all that seriously or get upset when certain inconsistencies show up. I’ll just appreciate whatever good he does do while accepting the fact that even some of the most well intentioned people can be compromised.
I dunno, I’m just ready for these PRC officials to stop crying in general...
