MJ was considered the GOAT before winning a ring. Dr J was the moar beloved player in the league as an 0-3 ringless NBA player.

There was a time before ring culture where fans appreciated players. That cant happen now.

What I cant stand about NBA ring culture is that its used as a condition to appreciate a player.

You cant tell me Melo isnt my favorite offensive player Ive ever watched. I dont care if hes ringless . I appreciated his game

Melo, AI, T-Mac was always loved in the streets, just like the young generation loves PG, Russ and Harden but they also know Steph and KD got the rings for that age group.

There's always been nuance to the ring culture and certain guys are trying to act like it's something different.

ESPN with Cold Pizza was the front runner with the ring culture talk with skip, woody paige and others

Being:flabbynsick: growing up 80s, 90s , didn’t even hear those conversations on a large scale about championships…

Hopefully we can go back to just enjoying players and how nice they were on the court/ field/ice, but I know it’s impossible because ESPN and other sports media’s successes are predicated on, “ring culture” debates and player/team rankings.

I feel like the younger generation is enjoying the players though. Kyrie's shoes were selling like crazy before the Jew thing, PG is like the #1 player young dudes mention as their favorite, my nephew who is in his early 20s was loving Harden during his teenage years. I'm sure the current teenagers are feeling dudes like Shai, Ja and AE. Maybe guys who are 30+ we get caught up in the MJ, Kobe, Bron thing, but even then when we were growing up we loved Melo, AI, T-Mac, etc.

I think on TV and online the ring culture thing is hyperfocused on because it drives clicks and ratings, but outside talking basketball i dont hear people just completely writing off a player because of rings. Now when it comes to talking about the GOATs, yes we bring up rings and the context behind those rings.

"Ring culture" has become the new "crash out." You nikkas sound like dorks. :dead:

As if Barkley isn't considered a top 5 PF despite never winning one.
As if you didn't rate Bill Russell over Wilt.
As if you had an issue with "ring culture" 15 years ago when there was hope that your guy could catch that ghost in Chicago.

:dead:

Be real. NBA Ring culture discussions and nuance doesnt exist. It never has. Why lie to ourselves that ring discussions ever carried a sense of reasonable thought!

Its always been flawed and extremely stupid.

I think it depends on individuals. True story, I’ve had a discussion on basketball with two young dudes in their early 20’s, breh, they repeated every thing ESPN said regarding analytics and of course LeBron, he was their GOAT because he went to 10 finals (said his record didn’t matter), but never knew what high school he actually went to. Point is, today’s media dilute the minds of a lot of people, young and old, rings is the only thing that matters to them.

I remember being so outspoken years ago about the ring culture, and it didn’t start with ESPN, it just took off with them. But now, we ALL have followed suit and use it in our GOAT arguments whether we admit it or not. But that’s the culture now.

The confusion lies here:
Rings matter when discussing a player’s level of GOAT status, not how great he/she was on court. However, everyone confuses the two.

He basically saying we don’t respect Dr. J ring in 83’ :stopitslime:

Hes wrong tho....Because when ur determining where to place DR J in the all time great talks ur looking at his rings and accolades,Accolades of all great players and HOFers matter. Its accolades of guys like TJ McConnell that dont in these discussions.Robert Horry won 5 rings with 2 diff erent teams and they dont get talked about much because he was a role player in nobodys top 100 list so theres nothing to discuss he was just apart of 5 title teams.
Gil didnt think before he spoke...
