The trade reflects Chicago's need for frontcourt help, coupled with San Antonio's desire to rid itself of Rodman. Despite Rodman's eccentric personality, his age (34), his desire for a huge contract and his potential to cause distraction, the Bulls have gambled that the 6-foot-8-inch forward will help them win a title.
Adding Rodman, the league's leading rebounder last season, to a lineup that already includes Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Toni Kukoc makes the Bulls a stronger contender. The Bulls were overpowered by Orlando's frontline during last year's playoffs.
Phil Jackson, the Bulls' coach, has mulled the idea of playing Jordan and Pippen together more in the backcourt, allowing Kukoc to play more small forward and giving the Bulls more backcourt size. But if Rodman causes a rift in team chemistry, particularly during the playoffs, the Bulls may regret the move.
Jackson called the acquisition of Rodman a "risk-reward" proposition. "He's extremely individualistic," Jackson said. "He believes in his own individual nature. He likes to have freedom and the expression that he has. We think that's O.K. as long as it stays within the team confines of playing ball together."
Rodman's behavior last season made him a major distraction, although he made the National Basketball Association all-defensive team and helped the Spurs achieve the league's best regular-season record (62-22). Rodman missed numerous practices, he was given a paid leave of absence early in the season and was benched during the playoffs on two occasions by Coach Bob Hill.
The Spurs were eliminated by Houston in the Western Conference finals, and Rodman made it clear during the off season that he wanted out. That became easier to do after the Spurs signed Carl Herrera, a free-agent forward from Houston, and re-signed Sean Elliott.
Rodman, who has averaged 12.5 rebounds in a nine-year career that includes two championships with the Detroit Pistons, is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $2.5 million this season, and he wants a much bigger deal. The Spurs plan to use Perdue, who averaged 8 points per game last season, as a backup for David Robinson.

Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant forward who led the NBA in rebounding the last four seasons but repeatedly exasperated San Antonio management, was traded yesterday to the Chicago Bulls for center Will Perdue.
Bulls general manager Jerry Krause and coach Phil Jackson met with Rodman for 36 hours last weekend. Jackson said Krause left the ultimate decision up to him.
"Phil and I talked very carefully about this," Krause said. "We did an awful lot of homework and found out a lot of things. We were both satisfied."
An array of problems has followed Rodman during his nine- year career in Detroit and San Antonio.
"I think it's great, I think he's excited, I think it's a perfect fit," said Neil Draddy, Rodman's agent. "They need some work off the boards and the extra defense he will give them. . . . I think everything will work out just fine."
Rodman, who's in the final year of his contract, will make $2.5 million this season.
The Spurs are to receive "other considerations" from the Bulls, although neither team said what they were.
Rodman, as usual, was the premier force under the boards this season. But the 34-year-old forward, who is partial to multicolored hairdos, assorted body piercings and late-night soirees with Madonna, proved a constant irritant to the Spurs' front office.
"Big surprise, huh?" Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich said of the trade.
Popovich, speaking at a news conference in San Antonio, said it was "difficult" to find a team willing to trade for Rodman.
When asked if it were a relief to be rid of Rodman, he said: "A big relief? We were without him for quite a bit last year, so it's not any different in many respects."
The Bulls, who made the move with the approval of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, also renounced rights to Pete Myers and Larry Krystkowiak.
In acquiring Perdue, a 30-year- old part-time center and marginal player, San Antonio made it all too clear it was simply intent on unloading Rodman.
Rodman was suspended during the season for insubordination and would often miss practice, his whereabouts unknown. During games he would spurn team huddles and remove his basketball shoes while on the bench.
"We are happy to acquire Dennis Rodman," Krause said. "We think he is the best rebounder in the game and the best defender at his position. He gives us a dimension we have lacked and enables us to take more advantage of the skills of Toni Kukoc."
Last year, in 49 games, Rodman averaged 16.8 rebounds and 7.1 points a game. Perdue, a 7-footer entering his eighth year, averaged 8.0 points and 6.7 rebounds last season in more than 20 minutes a game.

My question is, if Lebron is so damn valuable and carrying such trash players then why are they outscoring opponents with Lebron on the bench during the playoffs. Somehow that fact gets completely ignored in the Lebron is dragging these guys narrative. Looking at the roster they shouldn't be that good but some of the Cavs have seriously stepped up during these playoffs and are getting no credit.

In hindsight.. not even in hindsight would I say the bulls were stacked. Nobody seems to be naming any of the other players that make his bench "stacked"
