Left Field is now The Lounge

I agree with the mods. It had to be done. Though I am sad to see it go because left field was a lovely sanctuary to discuss rock, international music... etc there was too little active discussion. I went there less often than I wanted too because there was not enough vibrancy to the place.

This is a tough dilemma. Props to the mods for doing their best to figure it out.

I feel like Underground Hip-Hop and R&B need to be separate from the Booth. The Lounge is like a good name for that forum.

I guess those who enjoyed the Left Field vibe will have to keep creating threads like the Rage thread or new Arcade Fire album thread to counter the strength of the Hip-Hop threads which will inevitably dominate.

Actually more left field type threads in the forum will add credibility to the notion that it is a real music discussion and hopefully keep the trolls out.

Does anyone know of a good message board outside of The Coli that is similar to Left Field? The Left Field regulars are cool people whose music opinions I respect. But as it has been pointed out, the forum wasn't very active. I know the point of changing it to The Essence is to drive more activity, but I have a feeling that most of the discussions are going to be geared more towards hip hop.

This is a great idea and I have a feeling most of my activity on the Coli will now be in The Essence. But how are we gonna enforce this no trolling policy? Obvious trolling like spamming or "Gnauze Lost" is easy enough, but what about threads that put forward articulate and cogent arguments against commonly held opinions? In other words, how do we draw the line between "Illmatic: Lyrical Masterpiece or Fraud?" (which is obvious trolling from @intilectual recipricol) and a thread like "Outkast was never a top group" (which may not be a commonly held opinion - but was well-reasoned by @Wacky D).

Not sure about golden era. theres going to be plenty of topics about that already without us marketing the forum that way, we want to make sure the OG left field genres feel welcome and encouraged.

so far personally i like The Lounge the best. simple, broad and it sounds laid back which is the ideal vibe of that forum

Those types of threads don't belong in the new forum and they'll be removed. Argumentative or overly negative threads won't be allowed. The main theme is putting other members onto artists, albums and songs

About a month back I created a thread in Left Field called "Is Indie Rock Over?"

I knew that the premise was sort of silly and ESPN-troll like. But I was trying to generate some impassioned debate that I thought Left Field was lacking. The resulting discussion was decent and generated more replies than I anticipated. But I was trolling just a bit. If Indie Rock was truly over there would be no point in even asking the question. I would never ask is the era of Big Bands over because that is clearly evident and would generate no discussion.

Ultimately I guess it is up to the mods to set the pace and direction. Let's give it a chance. We will figure it out and get used to it. Hopefully it is a better product and in a few months we will all be in the Lounge.

I checked out that Tame Impala album on the strength of the comments in there and thats what that forum is all about. Its hard to put into words how things will be moderated because its not always cut and dry but someone arguing just for the sake of arguing isnt what we're looking for.
